KJ Costello having another tough night -
chrisk - 10-10-2020
Costello made a lot of high percentage short yardage passes, but could not score.
Kentucky is up 14-0 at the half, making several big plays including a long TD run and 2 very costly INTs on Costello.
LSU was obviously not all that much, being upset by Missouri today.
SEC Network has had some of the best games today.

Costello now benched. That may hurt his Heist-man chances. :(

His replacement just threw an interception. I'm sure K.J. is done for tonight, but he may get another chance this season.

I really wish KJ and the Pirate would have a great season and disrupt the SEC, but it was a big ask.
I fear for the Pirate because I think the speed and athleticism speed available in the SEC territory may pose long-term problems for the Pirate's attack. We shall see.
The other problem with the SEC this year is they are actually playing each other rather than 4 OOC cupcakes at home, so the Pirate didn't get his easy OOC slate to get the system humming.
FWIW - I anticipate that in 2020 we will all get a new education on strength of schedule. NOW playing a lot of conference games will be key. So it will be more impressive to go 8-2 in conference than to go 6-0 in conference.
And then in 2021 we will go back to believing going 7-1 in conference coupled with 8 overall home games and 4 OOC cupcakes is much better than suffering 2 losses in a schedule with 9 conference games and 11 or 12 Power5 opponents.

Costello gets back in there and quickly throws a pick 6.
MSU OL is not helping him as he's getting constantly pressured by a 3-man rush.

What a nightmare for K.J.

It took the SEC exactly one game to figure out Leach's offense. Drop 8 into a zone, get pressure on the QB with 3 rushers. It worked every year for Washington vs. WSU and it worked last week for Arkansas and today for Kentucky. MSU does not seem to have a very good offensive line which makes it tougher for KJ. They better improve in a hurry. Four of the next five games are Texas A&M, Alabama, Auburn and Georgia.

K.J. has just discovered that it is a very short trip from the penthouse to the outhouse.
Read somewhere that this is the first time a Leach coached team has ever been shut out offensively.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. I hope Leach fails miserably. Sorry KJ getting mixed in the wash. Wish he had gone elsewhere.

Speaking of Leach's attitude...

If any new Stanford coach in any sport had a statement like this I would tell that coach it is time for YOU to go.
I believe the greater MSU community might not see the student-athletes as people that should be respected for their commitment to the school, but even there this must seem odd. A guy that has been at MSU for a month is trying to find a way to "purge" student-athletes from the roster. Also doesn't sound like he really wants to keep KJ, so I am confident by 2021 he will imply that KJ hurt his grand plan.
For those that thought a Leach type was desirable after that first win and/or wondered why Stanford couldn't get someone like Leach to come to The Farm I trust some of the many reasons are coming into focus now.

Leach is a borderline (or maybe full) fascist in terms of personal ideology so I'm not surprised "purge" is the word that was top of mind.
I don't think that anyone thought that a Leach type was desirable at Stanford after the first win. At least not on this page. I can simultaneously be disappointed in Shaw's lack of eagerness to evolve and want nothing to do with terrible human beings (e.g., Leach, Meyer, Gundy) as coaches at Stanford.

Leach does not take losses gracefully. Particularly embarrassing losses. He tends to say extreme things that upset people, particularly Cardboard people. I remember similar comments to his statements when Wazzu lost a clunker to Kal 2-3 years ago.
Anyone remember his comments after we beat Wazzu in 2015 after they missed a last second field goal? Some reporter questioned his play calling in the second half. His response? "What are you, some kind of idiot?"
All I can say is Mississippi State knew what they were getting when they hired him. Or at least should have known.

Misssissippi State is in a tough place. If they just hire a typical coach they will lose recruiting battles to LSU, Bama, Auburn, Florida and many others. For even a brief period of success, they needed to take someone traditional SEC powers would never take.
I am not sure I like Leach as that option, but can see why those affiliated with Mississippi State would be willing to give this a try. If it fails they will just settle into their traditional spot in that bottom trio of the SEC West.

He did show some integrity and responsibility: "Offensively, we're not coaching very well right now," Leach said. "We have to coach better."

Good point. I dislike his offense. Personally I find it boring. I realize I’m in the minority. But 60 passes a game, 45 of which are long handoffs does nothing for me. But I get why it’s popular and why a place where it’s hard to recruit (WSU and MSU) would go that route.

Leach used to complain (particularly when he would lose to Washington) about how the Huskies would gobble up all the talent in the state and he was left with the culls. Interesting that he would want to go to another school where he would be in the same situation.

Damned, tough game. Four interceptions by COstello, and two by the back-up.
I wish KJ Costello all the success in the world this year.
After this year, I don't care what happens to Leach and MSU.

Mississippi State and Ole Miss are on nearly equal footing in the state recruiting-wise. (Sometimes the top guys will be poached by other SEC schools.) Not very similar to Washington-Wazzu where there's a clear favorite.

agreed on your take.
and for Leach, he is having a banner recruiting year -- in the low 30s (better than Ole' Miss which runs about 60 and Stanford in the low 70s)
