Should Florida Head Football Coach Dan Mullen still have a job?
- On Saturday, after his team lost at Texas A&M - in a stadium with 1/3 capacity IIRC - he said he wants Florida to have a full stadium of 90,000 fans for their game against LSU. His reason was that the crowd made a difference at College Station and he wants a similar home field advantage.
- At his Monday presser, Mullen praised the job his program had done keeping Covid from impacting the team, citing its effective mitigation measures.
- Today, a day later, Florida has announced 19 positive tests among players and staff before suspending all team activities.
Mullen wants to pack 90,000 into a stadium to yell and scream, in a raging pandemic that spreads in such environments. He's unable to protect his own players and staff, and is setting a spectacularly terrible example to the young men he is charged with leading and protecting, while clearly suggesting playing football games is more important than protecting the health of Florida residents, and we can assume his players and staff.

Actually most of the time it doesn’t. Not if the action you are taking is legal and people are acting with informed consent. Otherwise a hell of a lot of recreational activities would not be available. Including football. Players are “at risk” and face potential harm every play. Ask Dak Prescott.
He’s a football coach. Of course he wants people in the stands. If the state of Florida is stupid enough to allow it then it ain’t his fault.

Yes, I guess for a moment I forgot the times we are living in. It used to be that nobody would knowingly and willingly put lives at risk. Doing such a thing would once be considered illegal and not countenanced by the government.
We should just outlaw murder too. Everyone for themselves!

My response was to your incorrect legal statement. As for Mullen , once again, he’s a football coach. He made an idiotic comment. As noted, it’s Florida’s decision not his. I don’t think DeSantis and Co are going to allow full stadiums. In fact, I don’t even think it’s being considered. So in the end you have a stupid comment from a football coach made after a tough loss. Boy is THAT news......
As for not protecting his players etc - do you know what measures have been employed at the University of Florida? Do you have any idea? Do you know how this hit there? Again do you have any idea? You imply that his comments made Saturday are somehow related to the outbreak found Monday. Any proof of that.
I don’t know a damn thing about Mullen. And I could care less about him one way or the other. But you’re awfully free with assumptions that I assume you know nothing about. But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe you’re heavily tied to the Florida football community and can answer my questions. If so by all means have at it.

If a coach said he doesn't believe the virus is very dangerous, it would be irresponsible but not a fireable offense, imo.
But if a coach ignored directives to practice social distancing in team meetings, did not ever wear or require masks except when cameras were around, etc., then I think these things could add pretty quickly to a fireable offense.
Just my opinion.

The NFL fined coaches and teams for not wearing masks on the sidelines, which seems like the appropriate response.

One that I agree with. (On the masks that would depend on the particular “rule” in the state or county. Please don’t misunderstand. Masks should be required, imo. But if they are not in the particular jurisdiction one lives/works in (or mandated by the employer - in this case the Universityand/or the SEC) you can’t punish for not wearing a mask as it’s not violating a rule) And if we find Mullen did that, then punitive action ( at the least a suspension) is merited. But we don’t know that he did.

Yes. The NFL put that wise rule in place. Has the SEC? I suspect so. I certainly hope so.
