All D1 schools, regardless of record and regardless of how many games they play, are eligible for a bowl this year.

"In normal circumstances to qualify for a postseason bowl game, a team must meet the criteria to be considered a deserving team, which is generally defined as having a .500 overall record. The Football Oversight Committee’s recommendation waives that requirement for the 2020-21 season."

If there are enough bowl games, ANY team could go to a bowl game under the new rule. More big-brand teams, even if not very good (think Tennessee, Nebraska, Texas, FSU...), mean more TV eyeballs.

If there are enough bowl games, ANY team could go to a bowl game under the new rule. More big-brand teams, even if not very good (think Tennessee, Nebraska, Texas, FSU...), mean more TV eyeballs.
There is a steeply diminishing return here. FIU vs Arkansas St in the Camellia Bowl attracted 600,000 eyeballs last year. Not sure that a game featuring two losing teams (even "name brand" ones) would get a whole lot more. At some point, people get "bowled out"

it looks like there are 40 bowl games this year (including the 3 CFP games), given the lack of body bag games the Power 5 conferences would have ~30-35 teams with 0.500 or better records, the Group of 5 would have ~30-35 teams with 0.500 or better records so if they kept the 0.500 rule they would probably be at least 10 teams short of filling the bowl games with teams with a 0.500 or better record.....

38 bowl games plus the National championship game. Bahamas, Redbox and Hawaii cancelled. 76 teams.

there are 65 Power 5 conference teams with few playing non-conference games so I figure ~30-35 will have a 0.500 or better record. There are 59 group of 5 conference teams so I figure they will have a similar number of teams with a 0.500 or better record which leaves several vacant slots in bowl games if all of the bowl games happen.
below is the list of bowl games I was looking at, it shows 37 games plus the two CFP semifinal games and the CFP championship game so 74 teams for the 37 other bowl games plus 4 for the CFP playoffs so 78 teams to fill the current list of bowl games
