Colgate 9/3/22
Cal Poly 9/7/24

The annual Toothpaste Bowl.

And Cal Poly is usually very good. Maybe there will be a halftime bronco riding exhibition as they usually do well in the NCAA Rodeo Championship.

women: very good in VB; not very good in BB

Cal Poly picked up a player from Palo Alto High School, who was league MVP (and leading scorer) as a sophomore and a tremendous overall player.  Great hoops IQ.  Blew her ACL before junior year, which really hurt Paly's chances to be a special team this last season (they were still pretty good, though).

The knock on this girl, Shah, is that she is short and might have trouble getting shots off in college.  But she's a great player and kid, and I'll be rooting for SLO in the coming years.

Edit: Oops, football. Know WBB playing Cal Poly, too . . .

SLO has great team roping and saddle bronc. All Stanford has is an old timer grad up in Shasta County. But he wears nice shirts.

Colgate football history - all I can think of is Marv Hubbard and Mark Van Eeghen, both Raider RBs in the 70s.

And every cattle ranching family in Cali is represented among the alums of CPSLO. Excellent bull sale every year, too.

There must be a toothpaste joke somewhere.

4 of 5 dentists say they suck.

In (Cornell) college hockey, we would throw toothpaste boxes on the ice when playing them.  Their students would throw Big Red gum and would only come because their school offered free pizza if they came.

And some of us closely related to cattle people. Especially the endangered folks on PRNS leases.

When I was the Stanford Collegiate Rodeo Team, I competed in team roping and saddle bronc riding.  The SLO College Rodeo - Poly Royal - was the biggest and best rodeo each year - they actually had a crowd of people show up.  I had a number of friends from the Nevada High School Rodeo team that had rodeo scholarships to SLO.

I’m a former Mustang and had a friend who was active in rodeos. Rocky something. Of course way back when

Did Stanford's Jaquish and Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir get rid of that program over the summer as well? Talk about cutting out diversity, not many rodeo stars on campus these days I'd bet (well, there are no students on campus these day, but anyway).

RE: Stanford to host Colgate / Cal Poly - BobK - 10-27-2020

A number of students on campus. Grad and athletes. :)

RE: Stanford to host Colgate / Cal Poly - Mick - 10-27-2020

I don't think Stanford ever participated in collegiate boxing either.  Members of the NCBA (National Collegiate Boxing Association) typically include public colleges, the military schools and catholic schools.

These are the current member schools in the west: University of Nevada, Reno, Santa Clara University, U.S. Air Force Academy, University of California, Berkeley, University of Southern California, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, University of California, Davis, UCLA, San Jose State University, University of Washington, Oregon State University, University of Utah, Washington State University, and Boise State University

And in the other two regions:

East Region

Lock Haven University
U.S. Military Academy
Penn State University
Shippensburg University
U.S. Coast Guard Academy
Kutztown University
University of Massachusetts - Amherst
Trinity College
University of Connecticut
University of Hartford

Midwest Region:

Miami University (Ohio)
University of North Carolina
U.S. Naval Academy
Iowa State University
Xavier University
University of Cincinnati
West Virginia University
University of Iowa
Ohio State University
University of Alabama

Quote:The Farm produced some outstanding fighters under Lunny, including Ed Rothman, ’61, who placed second in the 1960 NCAA finals. But the NCAA dropped the sport in the early 1960s, and Stanford boxing—along with Lunny’s collegiate coaching career—ended in 1972.

"The Color of Life is Red" has a few pages (281-285) on boxing at Stanford

And just down 101 is SJS who had a very good boxing program and a street fighter named Bill Walsh.

I had a buddy at Stanford just a few years ago who was a bullfighter! (obviously not a Stanford Varsity/club bullfighter, but a bullfighter.) He was nuts. Saw him and his brother in action at the Salinas rodeo in undergrad. Loved it.

Back in the 50s, my dad was the college national champion calf roper and steer wrestler when he attended Cal Poly SLO.

RE: Stanford to host Colgate / Cal Poly - vataha - 10-27-2020

In mid 50's my dad (from Klamath Falls, Ore.) was on the Cal Poly rodeo team. He rode saddle bronc, bareback and rode bulls. He later in life was a team roper. Years later my son ran track and cross-country for Cal Poly (all-league X-C '18). My dad was Stanford Law School '62, he was a big fan of Bob Moore. ("that mad dog catch") I always prized tight ends from my dad's love for #86.

Cal Poly football has been down for awhile, switched from triple option to spread offense last year.
