Dodger tests positive as they clinch -
magnus - 10-27-2020
yikes. Justin Turner got a positive test result while he was playing in the 6th game of the World Series.
Given how much celebrating happened after with players that were most likely in close contact with Turner the last few days, this could turn out very poorly.

Now he's back on the field without a mask? Posing for a photo next to his manager? Next to the trophy which will probably be kissed innumerable times in the next 24 hours.

Really hope it's a false positive or he's not shedding.

Initial round of testing after the game yielded no positive results for either team. Another round was administered today.
A Rays family member got it. Not sure from which test. Guessing last night's.
I think this just means that JT is patient zero in the organization right?

As an unabashed and lifelong Dodger hater, the silver lining to the dark cloud of them winning their first World Series in 32 years is the scandal of Turner's Covid test results tainting their celebration.
I listened to Greg Papa on the radio this morning and heard him really tearing into MLB for what happened.
RE: Dodger tests positive as they clinch -

MLB released a statement basically saying "we tried to stop him. He wouldn't listen". They've launched an investigation. I wonder if there will be fines or worse. Quite a bit worse than the maskless infractions that the NFL have been cracking down on.

As a Giants fan and Dodger detractor (certainly during the Lasorda Years), I think this is a minor blip story.
Baseball managed to get through a season and a World Series (and a pretty darn good one, to boot), and The Sanctimonious - you know, those who objected to baseball even trying to have a season - need to rail on about something. On cue, enter Turner.
With the testing on-site, I actually think the ability to track/trace, if necessary, is there.
(Somehow I doubt that Turner gave the Rays' family member the virus . . . but hey! Maybe that itself is another scandal!).

I'm with Teejers on this -- the Turner story is closer to a minor blip than a scandal. Turner was irresponsible, but he already had been exposed that same evening to the teammates with whom he was celebrating. Turner will probably get suspended for a few games and this will be viewed as a minor transgression by most people, aside from those who hate the Dodgers and are looking for something to gripe about (and I realize there are a lot of Dodger-haters on this board!)

When Jose Canseco drove ridiculously fast (
140,
104), he knowingly put other people's lives at risk. So did Turner. Just because/if no one got hurt this time is not a good reason to discount his behavior as a "minor transgression".
At least, we hope no one got hurt. We can't know that yet.
Wow, this board has so rightfully derided the President over his behavior when he was sick, and his lack of being a good role model when he wasn't. It seems this other public figure is being treated quite differently.
Maybe we need a pledge that people publicly subscribe to: "If I am aware I may be contagious with COVID-19, I will strive to avoid infecting others."

Severity aside, I don't understand this viewpoint. Sure he'd exposed his teammates earlier in the night but as we've been told, it's how much exposure you get, not just if you've been exposed. One could have hoped that none of his teammates had enough close contact earlier in the night to get it, but those hopes would have been severely tested by not only a repeat exposure but much closer contact during the celebration including hugging, kissing, and maskless neighborly sitting for a stretch, all while he knew he was infected.

Not a Giants fan or a Dodger hater, but I think Turner should get a suspension of some duration.
Teammates
The problem for Turner was not really his teammates. I would agree it is logical to conclude they were already negatively impacted with little harm for additional exposure. HOWEVER, even for the players it is likely many were not close to 15 minutes with Turner prior to the post-game. If exposure is cumulative spending a few more minutes could make the difference.
The problem for MLB and Turner was there were the others at the post-game stuff.
Media
The media was down on the field too. A lot of those folks now can't work for ~7-14 days because of their exposure to Turner. That's a problem for those people and their employers.
Family
Wives, significant others and kids were all down there with the players too. In theory many of them should now be in quarantine, especially Turner's wife who got a nice big "Apparently I don't care about your health" kiss from her spouse.
MLB Executives
And then the field also included a number of MLB execs, the very group that might help determine the penalty for Mr. Turner.
Given the number of people that likely now need to quarantine for ~10-14 days, I think Turner might get at least a 14 day suspension to start 2021. MLB may want to make it much longer if the USA is still vaccine-free when MLB starts the regular season to send a message to teams at the start of 2021.
It probably won't be a big deal to sports fans in the USA as long as no one requires hospitalization. He shouldn't have been there, but MLB shares part of the blame too. Once his test was known they should have implemented some process to get him out of the stadium. As both teams were not in their home town, MLB should have had the logistics for that scenario ready to go. Apparently they didn't have a plan, so MLB shares a big portion of the blame IMHO.

As we're all trying to dole out our righteous indignation at Turner, how about a little perspective. From a spread-risk standpoint, which is worse: (a) Turner's post-game incremental additional exposure to teammates and exposure to families on the field, or (b) the spontaneous eruption of celebrations on the street by DodgerFan reveling in championship glory after 30+ year wait? Add on top of that the testing protocols for WS participants (and attendees, I'm sure), Turner just doesn't move the needle much.
And lex, that's not to say he may not be a jerk. But he was an integral part of a championship team and wanted to be on the field with his teammates/brethren. And the risk just doesn't strike me as THAT great. It's been 48 hours now . . . I'm sure we'll hear soon enough if any of his compatriots also test positive.

Good points. I hadn't thought about the media people, MLB execs, etc. who now will have to quarantine. That's a valid criticism.
I am guessing that Turner's teammates, coaches, and family probably were exposed to him earlier that day and would have had to quarantine in any event.
I agree that Turner should be suspended. I posted earlier that I expect a suspension.

Do you think just maybe there were no positive tests attributable to Turner's celebratory moments?
I take that as a given, mainly because we would have heard about it and enough people in media would probably like to nail the guy and MLB.
I'm fine doling out punishment to align with the harm . . . but I would have given him 1-2 game suspension as a baseline, even with 0 traceable additional positive tests.

There were some subsequent positive tests in the Dodgers organization.
https://amp.usatoday.com/amp/6195587002
But it's not publicly known if any are related to Turner. The article says that "most" of the cases were outside of the bubble so it leaves room for the naysayers.
Regardless of if anyone else got sick, there should have been some fine/suspension. Set a precedent. Show that MLB means business with regards to covid safety (like the NFL and NBA have done). Otherwise, how will they control this next season, when the virus will still likely be running around (figuring vaccine's impact won't be enough for at least a year). Terrible example to let slide. (I don't think it's just Turner's fault, but Manfred's not going to discipline himself). The timing of the news release is suspect as well, allowing skeptics to view this as a newsdump while the nation is looking elsewhere.
