Michigan was stopped on 4th and 1 to add to their suffering.

I admit to being petty - that did cheer me up . . . a wee bit.

Harballs did something that nobody else could do. For that he's a hero and maybe you wouldn't have a D1 program to agonize over if he was never hired.

I'm more interested in the fact Nick Herbig is starting at OLB for Wisconsin as a True Frosh, and I am convinced if he were on Stanford's team he wouldn't even be playing, and certainly wouldn't be playing with his hair on fire like he is for the Badgers.

Hardballs and Monty showed it can be done at the Farm without producing a stinky pile.

Lets get Harbs back. I know it will never happen but we need to do something.

OMG Madness!! Madness!!
The whole point of hiring is you consider the needs of the program, the strengths of the person, the trends in the game.
Harbaugh was an inspired choice 14ish years ago. He was a turnaround specialist and a program builder, and was able to get a great staff and motivate kids 14 years ago.
Harbaugh is now damaged goods. He is well known now not to be an x’s and o’s guy, and he wears out his welcome. His next job should be someplace with a storied past that needs his fire to fundraise, recruit and motivate. Given his recent string of failures, it may not even be a Power 5 team. maybe like one of the UT’s (Austin) or even Rice because his messianic style may fit Texas.
Stanford doesn’t need a turnaround specialist or a program builder. It definitely makes no sense to hire an old man who peaked 10 years ago. It does need someone with a lot of energy to do what it takes to recruit 2 deep, and a fire in the belly to grab and keep a great staff and who will fire when necessary, and who demands of himself and of his staff to deliver up to these insane salaries.
Is that still David Shaw? I’m hopeful that it can be.

In a word, no f*cking way.

Why would any of us be happy that Harbaugh is failing at Michigan? Harbaugh did great things for the program and started a 10-year run of success that we have never seen in our history. He left at a good time for a pro job and we were able to build on his success for a time. There should be no I’ll will towards him.

1. Because he is an unlikeable person, and it's hard to wish a d-bag well?
2. Because he bailed on Stanford, and if he had stuck around for one more season, then Stanford would have won it's first and only MNC?
Having said that, I don't begrudge Harbs for bolting to the 'Niners. And I appreciate that he single-handedly resurrected Stanford football from the grave (we're going to need another miracle-worker soon, I'm afraid).
But I don't have to
like the guy for doing so; let alone eternally wish him well.

Yeah, if you are going to begrudge JH for bolting to SF, you have to begrudge all the other Stanford coaches who have bolted to perceived better jobs when they have had some success (which is just about all of them except Shaw).
One of the reasons I have always been favorably inclined towards Shaw is that he chose to stick around. Now, an unfortunate message is being sent to future Stanford coaches. When you are successful there you had better leave because success is fleeting.

Teejers, Stanford has two national championships. Before the current playoff system all football championships were mythic even Oklahoma’s during their 47 game streak. But they are credited by football journals.

Why should this make you happy? Why do you have so much hate for Harbaugh?
The guy saved Stanford football. Shaw may no longer be capable of sustaining it, but Harbaugh created the environment & attitude that started the greatest 10-year period in program history.
Michigan needs a new HC for sure, but I won't celebrate that for one second. I had hoped Harbaugh would have been successful there. It would've been a great story.

There's a large space between that and relishing in his failure. I hope you can find it.

Perhaps a little misery loves company in there given how we have been doing recently.

JH staying on The Farm for another year or two?!? LOL
OK, that idea is funny. Made me laugh.
Harbaugh was actively looking for bigger, more prestigious roles almost before he started coaching at Stanford, definitely was looking hard after the 2008 season. That type of EUTM we admired extended to his career aspirations. There was no way he'd have multiple 10+ win seasons at Stanford. One 10+ win season would be more than enough to keep him on his trajectory at the time. So 2010 was the end of our journey together.
Before we go there EUTM was about accomplishments not the money. So coaching in a relatively quiet 50,000 seat stadium for a small private school in the Pac-12 just was not going to be enough. He almost certainly understood a 10+ win season would be the perfect launching pad for better roles. So we got the one and then he was done.
I am not sure I am happy to see him struggle since I don't think he did anything that warrants that perspective. He was a change agent with a passion to do amazing things as a football coach. Stanford got 4 years. Stanford got a blast of EUTM that fueled the program for a decade. We were lucky to get what we got, and I can't imagine that anyone involved with that hiring process ever thought he would stay more than 3-5 years if he was even moderately successful.
In this particular FBS/CFP era Stanford football will not get to keep an outsider for more than 4 years unless the coach bounces between good (not great) seasons and mediocre/bad seasons like Willingham. And even with his track record Willingham got a more lucrative gig in 7 years.

How many losing seasons does Shaw get because he is an alum and an exemplary human being? Has there been any pressure from his boss (who’s the boss really?) to chuck coordinators? Has he even thought of shaking up the recruiting staff? Finally does the Stanford community really care about filling up their stadium? Face it guys the tailgate parties have always been more important than the football.

Yep, that's the Catch-22. Any coach with the football savvy, drive, and moxie to succeed at Stanford is likely to be the kind of guy who will want to move on after he has had some success.
We are going to be a stepping stone. The possible exception might be a Stanford alum. Like we have now.

At least Cactus Jack knew how to laugh. I know Shaw can do a Ted Talk but does he know any jokes? What is his resting pulse? Does he have a secret stash of Gary Larsen cartoons?

I remember a good Cactus Jack joke.
A mover and shaker comes up to him at a get-together.
"Cactus Jack, I see where you are the "Director of Football". Tell me son, when are you going to start coaching?"
Also, I knew a guy who was recruited during the Cactus Jack era. He was kind of a wag.
He had never met Curtice before and showed up on campus for a visit. He said he walked into a room where there were a bunch of people. Saw this one guy who he said he would have sworn was the janitor. Turned out to be Cactus Jack.
