Data plots states outbreaks vs containment measures - oregontim - 11-19-2020

The correlation shows clearly in the data. Plots 50 states with cases on the vertical and containment measures on the horizontal. I assume this surprises no one. I like the variable "containment measures" because it pulls in multiple factors.

I'm curious how different successful and unsuccessful nations would plot on this (or regions inside nations if one wants to argue a nation, like the US, can be varied in its response)

I'd be interested in the international version as well.

Another interesting point on the US  chart is Florida. Florida seems quite the outrider, and some would say the most successful single data point. That surprises me. And certainly doesn't fit into my biases.

Regardless of the color of the state, lots of old folks there . . . who prefer to survive this.  That would be my gut take, anyway.

Ventilation?  Open windows, outdoor activities, and lots of sun for those fans of Vit D theories?  Doctored numbers if you believe conspiracy theories?  But let's just wait a couple months for pronouncements.  Sweden didn't show any uptick until recently.

It seems like weather is the other variable.

States significantly below the trendline (that is, they have fewer cases than would be expected based on restrictions):
Florida
Mississipi
Alabama
Nevada
Georgia
Virginia
South Carolina

States above the trendline (more cases than would be expected based on degree of restriction):
North Dakota
Wyoming
Wisconsin
Nebraska
Rhode Island

New Mexico is the one state with a higher than expected number of cases for its containment measures that is a warm weather state, while Maine is an exception to the rule in the other direction (cold weather state with fewer cases than would be expected for its containment)
