WBB: Stanford 108 Cal Poly 40 - 81alum - 11-25-2020

Preview:

It is a minor miracle that this game will happen at all, and with the looming uncertainty about the season, this may be one of the few chances to see how our team is evolving during the epidemic.  With no exhibition games, this will be our first opportunity to see newcomers Agnes Emma-Nnopu, Jana Van Gytenbeek, and Cameron Brink.  But my own excitement is centered more on seeing how our sophomores have improved, and seeing how Tara chooses to put the pieces of the team together.  She is a master puzzle-solver, and each year she constructs an effective team out of a different mix of players, and the process by which she does that is fascinating.

As for today’s game, Cal Poly is led by 6’3” Sierra Campisano.  We discussed her as a possible recruit on this board but I have no idea whether Stanford ever recruited her.  She was the #14 recruit in the ESPN top 100 coming out of high school and went to Oregon.  She had some outstanding players ahead of her and played only 6 minutes a game through her sophomore year, and transferred to Cal Poly, where she sat out a redshirt year before playing last year, where she averaged 17ppg and 8rpg.  She is a versatile player who shoots treys at 37% and freethrows at 82%.  I’m sure she will earn the respect of our defense.

It feels unreal reading this, but thank you for posting it... and the season started since there are two other games being played... this is probably the most excited I’ve been since March with all that’s going on...

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Cal Poly 11am today - BobK - 11-25-2020

Stanford scouted Campisano. I was there at several games with Stanford coaches present. But they watch lots of players abd I do not believe offered. However she is good
The question now is which Mustangs didn’t make the trip ?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Cal Poly 11am today - 81alum - 11-25-2020

I got an email a while back saying that the "Chalk Talks" would be recorded and emailed out an hour before the game.  I haven't received anything.  Has anyone else?

No not I nor friends

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Cal Poly 11am today - 81alum - 11-25-2020

Game Notes say expected starters are:
Wilson
Belibi
Lexie Hull
Williams
Jones

We will see the actual starters come up on live stats soon,

I am reminded that Tara rewards hard work in practice with starts, but the people who start do not always get the most minutes.  In any case, if this expected lineup actually comes to pass, it is a vote of confidence in Wilson and Belibi, which is nice to see in each of their cases.  Maybe Belibi will get a lot of work guarding Campisano.

The livestats confirm the starting lineup.  Wilson and Belibi must have had a terrific off season!

I wish the announcers would EVER give the score.

It looks like one official is wearing a neck gaiter, which is not an allowed face covering in SCC for collegiate athletics.

I believe the email said they would be sending them for Pac-12 league games.

I went to the gostanford WBB schedule and clicked on livestream.  It said page not found.  Is there another livestream?  The audio feed works.

I reread that email and I'm thinking now that chalk talks may not start until the conference season.

Thanks M T, I started watching just in time to see Jones make a beautiful court-long drive to score.

Cal Poly looking ok so far.

Brink may need some more time in the weight room.

Good Q1 for Stanford.
Deep team.  So deep.
Jump looks fit (nice floater)!

Cal Poly looks legit, though the depth differential may lead to greater separation.

No problem with the live stream feed here.

Some Q1 observations:
Hayley is not only healthy, but she is no longer deferring. She is attacking the basket, playing aggressively and running the team as a point forward. Her skill set has either grown or is now on full display.
Hannah's first shot was a floater! Nice to see her doing something offensively other than catch and shoot threes coming off of a screen.
Cam looks tight and needs to work on her strength on offense and defense. I like her attitude.

Happy camper here. Jones looks awesome!

Agree on Hayley and Hannah, if Hayely keeps playing like this, she'll develop into a true super star.  If Jump adds a drive to her game, it really should open up her lethal 3 pointer.  I think Brink came in with some jitters, but she is moving well, and given her size she is going to be a brobdingnagian problem for other teams on both ends of the court.  This team has so much talent, I really hope we can stay healthy.

Ok, I’m off my game. Did the announcer say “Gucci!” when Ki made that deep trey?
I don’t get it...
