So it's Thanksgiving, and time to, well, give thanks.
This, by so many counts, has been a horrible year. No need to inventory them here. That's not the point of this post. Instead, I want to thank everyone for contributing to this Covid board, started after my first post on the subject on Feb. 28. I know Stanford sports is suppose to be the thing that ties everyone together here, but from my experience, this has developed into the best discussion board about this pandemic anywhere on the internet, and it really isn't even about Stanford, Dr. Scott Atlas notwithstanding. ;)
Yes, it gets political sometimes, but we've been able to peacefully co-exist in the vast majority of cases, as we discuss and debate very difficult topics through a variety of prisms. We've shown a level of maturity and respect for others that belies what we see on most internet forums, and I hope is something Cardboard members and the board publisher can take some pride in. I know for a fact I would be a hell of a lot less informed without this board, and I thank everyone for their passion, perspective, and ability to bring valuable information and ideas to our collective attention.
Now, this may seem a little odd, but in the spirit of everyone contributing something valuable to the Covid discussion, and considering the fact we usually each bring a dish for Thanksgiving dinner, that most of us will be having with smaller company that usual, I thought it might be cool to offer a yummy recipe each of us might want to make for Thanksgiving or any time after. I'll start...
If you like Brownies, and want to have something more authentic than what a pre-packaged mix produces, you will love eating this favorite I just made for my minimalist dinner tomorrow:
https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/25080/mmmmm-brownies/
Feel free to add Walnuts to the batter or just sprinkle on top before baking. Alright, what y'all got?

Thank you, OF, for getting the COVID-19 Board discussion. I agree, this has been the most valuable discussion and source of information and I'm thankful for all of you for contributing.
To add a recipe for "Thanksgiving" Santa Barbara (County) style, I'm adding this recipe for "
Santa Maria Tri Tip" This isn't exactly the recipe I follow - I throw my own spices together - but this is the way I learned to cook it. Tri tip used to be unique to Santa Barbara County where almost all Tri Tip was consumed. When Reagan was President, the Western White House was near to SB and the WH press corp got to experience SB Tri Tip. Over time, demand made Tri Tip available across the country, including Costco. Lately, I've been cooking Tri Tip via Sous Vide. Always a big hit anytime of year.

Best pancakes ever. DO NOT over mix. Barely mix the batter together. The less trauma to the mix, the lighter and fluffier it is. We use salted butter and do not add the salt called for in the recipe.

no recipe, just want to say thanks in general for this board and all the posters, but specifically to the small number of posters who take the time and effort (and have the patience) to keep posting minority views despite the Covid-19 forum probably seeming like a liberal echo chamber to them. (I won't name names for fear of leaving someone out, but I'm sure you know who you are). I have benefited greatly from reading your thoughts. All of my friends think the exact same way that I do (such a weird coincidence!) and I don't know where to go to read thoughtful alternative views. In addition to learning from your substantive remarks, your posts have made me much more aware of my own biases and filters that influence how I obtain and evaluate information about the world. So I thank you, and please keep it up!

Off topic squared, I suppose; not a recipe. But the post title reminds me that somewhere on my gratitude list is this site. I came for the first time last March for the good pandemic information, and stayed for that plus the civil discussions of issues, and the fun discussions of Stanford sports. Thanks all for keeping it fun, useful, interesting, and, yes, civil.
Thanks all.

OK - I'm going to put the emphasis on the "Happy" part of the greeting we always give on Thanksgiving.
Here's a YouTube video of a song from the 70's that us oldsters probably remember. I apologize to anyone offended but for many of us, I hope it puts a smile on your face like it did mine, remembering what it was like when we were young, feeling smart and naughty.

I suggest letting the egg and buttermilk warm to room temperature prior to making "flapjacks."

I'm thankful for friends, family and people who fully articulate a well-thought-out opposing idea.
And just for grins, I am thankful for Abraham Lincoln. Not for the obvious reasons, but because he was the President who first established Thanksgiving as a national holiday. In 1817, New York was the first state to establish Thanksgiving as a state holiday. Obviously, there were various celebrations prior to that date and in other colonies.
Earlier presidents had made Thanksgiving proclamations of one sort or another, including Washington, Adams and Madison.

President Lincoln established Thanksgiving as a national holiday in the middle of the Civil War, on 10/3/63.

The NY Times collected six-word thank yous from its readers, collated them, and put this out. It's rather poetic.
Quote:‘I am thankful to be thankful’
Last week, I invited readers to send us six words describing what made them thankful in 2020. It’s a form of writing — the six-word memoir — popularized by the author Larry Smith.
More than 10,000 of you replied, and we’re grateful to all of you. Here is a selection of your responses:
The crinkling eye above the mask.
A furtive hug with a friend.
The backyard haircuts are getting better.
My choir still meets on Zoom.
Friends who give me streaming passwords.
Family reunion in January, before Covid.
Miss family, but safer for them.
Saved a lot of lipstick money.
More homemade pasta, no more jeans.
No shame in elastic-waist pants.
Braless at home? No one cares.
Mom, 87, rocking pretty, pandemic ponytail.
Teenage son still likes to snuggle.
My parents live two blocks away.
No better excuse to avoid in-laws.
This stinking year is nearly over.
*
Sunny mornings, a window facing east.
My bicycle, the trail, each morning.
Windows have never been so important.
Toscanini’s recording of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
5329 games of solitaire, won 5286.
Throwing the football with my sons.
Jonesy got a hole in one.
Still ridin’ my horse at seventy.
Postcards crossing the country — real mail.
Living in the Green Mountain State.
So grateful to live in Canada.
Left US for science-believing Germany.
I am thankful for Pastor Bob.
I’m just thankful for indoor plumbing.
I am thankful to be thankful.
Never been social; now I’m good.
I am bored, but not dead.
*
Ambulance took him. He came home.
Hearing granny laugh on the phone.
It’s just a cold, not Covid.
My parents did not get it.
Reached age 92, grandson reached 3.
I held my dying husband’s hand.
Held my son as he died.
Our kids, after my wife died.
My wife gave me her kidney.
Lung cancer team at Sloan Kettering.
Got sober during 2020, stayed sober.
Wasn’t too late to say sorry.
Wildfires took much but we survived.
Faith, family, friends, dedicated medical professionals.
Dr. Fauci and all truth-speakers.
Volunteers who take experimental vaccines.
Healthcare workers. Healthcare workers. Healthcare workers.
*
Pandemic baby after years of trying.
At twelve weeks, size of lime.
Special-needs child, graduated feeding tube.
My toddler and my weed guy.
Toddler sees Audrey Hepburn, says “Mama!”
I watched her learn to read.
Water cooler chats with six-year-old son.
Thankful for learning, in my pajamas.
Teachers’ patience. “ … Reminder: no fart machines.”
I teach funny, resilient 8th graders.
High school, even in a pandemic.
Survived first semester of online university.
Six years later, wife completes PhD.
Out of prison with great job.
Rediscovering myself by reading the Bible.
Stole my car, not my books.
Tried. Failed. Failed worse. Kept going.

Americans waited in line to vote.
Thanks for voting, Americans. — Immigrant scientist.
Gritty becoming an icon for democracy.
Once again, my Black vote matters.
God, family, freedom, Trump, health, USA.
Trump is our best president ever.
Vaccines are coming. Thank you, Trump.
Vaccine is coming, Trump is going.

Aunt’s Jell-O salad not gonna happen.
Solitary Thanksgiving means no turkey. LOBSTER.
Alone, spouses thankful for tiny turkey.
Daughter lovingly uninviting me for Thanksgiving.
Zoom Thanksgiving beats an ICU Christmas.
Thankful for sweet potato pie, y’all.
Red or white, and occasionally rosé.
The many people who deliver food.
My restaurant colleagues, who never quit.
248 cocktail hours with my mom.
Empty calendar means frequent dinners together.
There’s really more kindness than hate.
*
We’re falling in love over FaceTime.
Fell in love six feet apart.
I have someone I can hug.
Even after I cheated, she stayed.
The freedom of filing for divorce.
Lost job. Lost boyfriend. Found happiness.
I might marry Coronavirus Boy Toy.
Gayer than ever, very in love.
Postponed wedding, having a baby instead.
Fell in love at age 75.
I proposed and she said yes.
Will you marry me, Taylor Hollenkamp?
