Breaking a 40 year streak - Section QQ - 11-26-2020

Tomorrow would have been 40 consecutive Big Games attended in person for me, and 44 overall. The last game I missed was 1980, when I was a senior in high school.  I don't remember much about my first Big Game (1969) except that we won close, and I will never forget the first game I attended at Memorial Stadium (1982).  I'm a little sad, but I will feel a lot better if we win tomorrow.  Happy Thanksgiving and beat the weenies.

last Big Game I missed was 1984.  First one attended 1979.  Not fond of the games in Berkeley the last 10-15 years (well the games have been generally fine, it has been getting in and out of the stadium and the occasional beer can thrown at us that was not so fun).

Similar. Started my streak in 1984 as a HS senior. I was thinking of wandering over to tightwad hill tomorrow afternoon, but someone said they blocked it off.

This year would have been my 49th, with 46 consecutive (missed 1974 when I was in high school, which I rue to this day).  I had planned on celebrating my 50th in Stanford Stadium next year.
Had a brief thought about going to Tightwad Hill just to keep the streak alive.  But cancelled that because: 1) It'll be better on TV, 2) Don't want to be around the others who may be congregating there, and 3) I will be at work.

Tightwad Hill will be "closed".   The cannon will be on the east side of the stadium (a.k.a. where the portapotties are normally located).

I have never watched a Big Game live on TV before, so this will be very odd for me.
Attended every Big Game since I was a Stanford Frosh back in 1989.
Never missed a kickoff, and never missed the clock hit 0:00.  0:12 is not the same thing as 0:00.   ;)

Nor is 0:04, unfortunately.

Guys, this one doesn't count in the streak thing. I am at 65 consecutive and I will not be breaking that.

My first Big Game was 1974 at Memorial Stadium when Mike Langford kicked a 50 yard FG to win it as time expired. What a great game! I have found the best, most exciting, and controversial games have all been on even years at Memorial Stadium. My theory is that the stands are so much closer to the field - especially compared to the old Stanford Stadium - and made the intensity of the game and the fans even greater.

Absolutely correct.  There's a little known codicil in the Faber Constitution . . .

I've attended the last 45 Big Games. This year would have been my 46th. I overcame flat tires, last-minute red-eye flights, living out-of-state, and cancer surgery -- but not Covid. Darn virus.

My first was 1960.  The most memorable - 1963.  It still gives me chills just thinking about that day.

Further ones in a streak still count.  Anyone who holds missing this one against anyone is an asshole.

RE: Breaking a 40 year streak - Phogge - 11-27-2020

Amen. First one was 1953, the Garrett-Larson duel. The tie kept Stanford out of the Rose. Missed 1954 but started my streak in ‘55 with a 19-0 shutout of Cal. First Memorial game the next year and Lou Valli runs wild but somehow Cal wins. Valli would have been an All American the next year but was hurt early and his career was over.

Amen brother.

My attendance streak started in 1986 when, as the SF Chronicle put it:

"a 1-9 Cal team, with a head coach who had been fired three weeks earlier, with a quarterback who hadn't started a game all season and an offense that hadn't scored a touchdown in nearly a month, beat a 7-2 Stanford team"
