This is where college football resides in the Bay Area journalism view. I only get online headlines from the Chronicle and here is one reason why...having to EXPLAIN what Big Game is:

Big Game, a Cal and Stanford rivalry, might not feel anything like a big game when the teams meet without fans.

I miss the Palo Alto Times.....  The Chronicle and Mercury haven’t covered Bay Area college football to any real extent in years.

You and me both Lex The Paly Times was great for Stanford fans

Palo Alto Times was great for all sports coverage, pros, college, and high school.
Having spent my younger days in Palo Alto in the 50's and 60's.
Dick O'Connor - Sportswriter comes to mind. Ken Yim - sports photographer.

As for Stanford sports, especiallly, MBB played in the small (Encina?) gym. Cimbed in through the
roof window as a youngster. I remember Tom Dose, great center.

When Bill Leiser retired from the Chron the paper basically dumped its college football coverage.

P-A Times: Walt Gamage, then Dave Wik, when Palo Alto was simply a college town and the bedroom community for United Airlines pilots, Lockheed employees and engineers at H-P and Varian.

The Chron doesn't follow Stanford because Stanford has no following. Just a dwindling number of die-hards who are, sadly, dying off.

After FitzGerald left, the Chron has former Warriors beat reporter Rusty Simmons left to cover Cal, Stanford, and COVID.

Bay Area college football irrelevant. Only semi relevant when Stanford was winning. Only pro sports count to the masses unlike the entire Midwest and Southwest.
