Biden's HHS secretary - BostonCard - 12-07-2020

Xavier Becerra (BA 1980, JD 84) will be nominated by Biden to be the Secretary of HHS.  I generally like Becerra, but I don't think he's the right person for the job.  While he did defend the ACA from attacks by the Trump administration (including a recent USSC case), I don't think that is the biggest requirement for the job.  He doesn't really have a background in health, and has only headed the California DoJ, which, compared to HHS is a miniscule agency (DoJ employs about 1100 attorneys and 3700 non-attorney employees, while HHS has 79,540 employees).

Organizational skills and bureaucratic management will be most important. I have no way of judging Becerra on that. I doubt any of us really do.

Current HHS sec, former pharma exec, Azar is a yes-man chump. Price was an MD, but he was corrupt. Becerra will be an instant upgrade over those two.

I have no way to form an opinion one way or the other at this point. I do think the fact he has no health care credentials or experience is a negative. He has experience leading a much smaller organization that does something he understands quite well. Leading a much larger one that does many things some of which he doesn't understand at all will be a challenge. We shall see.
