The Future at Quarterback - Rando - 10-21-2011

Brett Nottingham (6-4 / 210 - RS-FR)
Passing: 260-369 (70.5%), 304.8 YPG, 44 TDs, 7 INT
Rushing: 67 attempts for -3 yards, .05 YPC, 3 TD

"A big, physical presence in the pocket, is one of the more precise and accurate passers in the West. Good field vision and leadership and throws a nice deep ball."-Scout.com

“He’s shown a command of the offense,” Shaw said early in camp. “We already knew about his physical tools — big strong kid, throws the ball really well — but there is more to the position and it has been fun to see.”-Coach Shaw

""I was pleasantly surprised in camp. I always knew he was a very good quarterback, obviously, but the redshirt year is always very tough. It was tough for me, it was tough for him. Luckily, he was able to have a very good camp and come in and play."-TE Zach Ertz

"By most accounts he isn't the most super, spectacular quarterback in the nation. But he seems to be a solid, mature, and accurate passer. He doesn't have a big arm, but he looks ready to start playing at the D1-A level next season."-UCLA Fan Blog

Was close to breaking record numbers for California HS QB's.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - Rando - 10-21-2011

Josh Nunes (6'4 / 208lbs - RS SO)
Passing: 168-305 (55.1%), 200.9 YPG, 26 TD, 18 INT
Rushing: 59 rushes, 189 yds, 3.14 YPC, 4 TD
40 Time: 4.85
HS GPA: 4.5 honors

"Nunes has all the right measurables, good size, tremendous arm strength, pocket presence, toughness and leadership. Needs to continue to refine his release and work on making it more fluid."-Scout.com

"Nunes wasn't well-known early in the recruiting period, but that won't be the case for long. He is a very polished and savvy quarterback. He's a well-coached pocket passer who understands the game, works through progressions and has the arm to make any throw."-ESPN

"Nunes proved worthy of his Under Armour All-American status with a great showing both Friday and Saturday. Aside from his striking arm strength, Nunes certainly looked good on the hoof and passed the eyeball test physically with his 6-foot-4, well-built frame.

Known more for his pure pocket passing skills, the ESPN 150 Watch List prospect showed good footwork and the ability to throw on the run with velocity and accuracy. Nunes flashed his powerful arm throughout the day in various drills and demonstrated he could make all the college throws, particularly the difficult deep-out route. What was impressive in person was his ability to apply touch or zip depending on the throw and his overall RPMs on the football.

We would have liked to have seen him drive the ball more downfield at times, but he got rid of the ball quickly and his delivery described everything about his two-day performance -- it was very smooth." Scouts Inc

Re: The Future at Quarterback - Rando - 10-21-2011

Robbie Picazo (6'4 / 190lbs - RS SO)
Passing: 192-310 (61.9%), 196.7 YPG, 33 TD, 6 INT
Rushing: 50 carries, 25 yds, .05 YPC, 3 TD
40 Time: ?
HS GPA: 4.5

[Image: 98557034.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=77BFBA...ABF25817B5]

Despite accruing even gaudier senior season statistics than the potential USC starting quarterback, Picazo is humble when comparing himself to Barkley.

“Matt Barkley is in a league of his own, he’s a pretty special player,” he said.

Perhaps Picazo shouldn’t be so modest. In the 2008 CIF Playoffs when the Tesoro Titans faced the Mater Dei Monarchs, Picazo dominated the head-to-head matchup and led his team to a 38-35 victory. Picazo, operating in a spread offense, posted season highs in completions and attempts (22-31) in the game while throwing for 228 yards and a pair of scores with one interception. Barkley ended his prep campaign by only completing 12 of his 33 pass attempts for 233 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions.

Not only did Picazo out-shine Barkley from a statistical standpoint during his senior year, there were a handful of other “top-flight” gunslingers that finished behind him as well. UCLA freshman quarterback, Richard Brehaut, achieved comparable statistics (19 TDs, 4 INTs and 2,406 yards), but Picazo’s QB rating of 118.0 bested Brehaut’s mark of 111.0.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - iyengar06 - 10-21-2011

I really liked what I saw from Kevin Hogan this fall. He's got a lot of guys to pass on the depth chart, but I'm throwing that name out there now as a sleeper for QB in 2012...

Re: The Future at Quarterback - Rando - 10-21-2011

Sacks count as negative yardage.

I think Nottingham can run. He has the best 40 time of all QBs our QB's not named Luck (as well as best passing stats in HS). He is more likely a pocket QB, despite having the speed to run.

I really like that Picazo beat Matt Barkley not only in the game they played in HS, but statistically.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - estephan500 - 10-22-2011

Appreciate you compiling these. Good info.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - Rando - 10-17-2012

Look at the high school completion % and compare Nunes to Nottingham. I know these are HS stats, but I believe so far they are carrying over to NCAA for both. Nottingham has something like 11 attempts though.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - Oasis - 10-17-2012

This is like the old Benjamin-Cordova controversy.  Maybe Shaw should start Nunes and if he's having a Washington/ND day, sub in Nottingham or Hogan in the 2nd quarter.  Hogan got a couple of snaps last week.  We aren't going to beat the ursines (or anybody else) unless we can pass.  If a show of confidence would fix Nunes's problems they would be fixed by now.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - stan01 - 10-17-2012

Thank you, can you also get us Dallas Lloyd's stats?

Re: The Future at Quarterback - Rando - 10-17-2012

Dallas Lloyd (6'2 / 205lbs - FR)
Passing: 67/120 (55.8%), 176.0 YPG, 15 TD, 5 INT
Rushing: 84 rushes, 284 yds, 3.38 YPC, 5 TD
40 Time: 4.55
HS GPA: 4.0

This kid has a real chance to be an exciting prospect at the next level. Lloyd has of extremely large proportions upside as both an athlete and passer with an excellent blend of size, speed, arm strength and playmaking ability. -ESPN

One of the premier dual-threat quarterbacks in the West, Lloyd is quick, with great technique and has good mobility and running ability.-Scout.com

“I’m a great leader and I can scramble well and make plays. I have a quick release and a strong and accurate arm. I’m a dual-threat quarterback.

“But I really want to improve my footwork and my drops. I’ve been working on that a lot and just doing a lot of drills and stuff.” - Dallas Lloyd

[Due to lack of information, Lloyd's senior statistic take into account 6 games for yardage, 8 games for TD/INT. He was injured in the 8th game of his senior season. Stats from maxpreps.com and the stanford website are conflicting.]

Re: The Future at Quarterback - Rando - 10-17-2012

I'm not really saying that High School stats are really important to college success. I'm really not sure how important it is. Every offense is different, and every QB is going to have a different O-Line, WRs, playbooks, and opposing defenses.

I think things like completion %, INT and 40 time can tell us something about our QB recruits before they come on campus. I find it interesting that Nunes is about 50% in NCAA right now where he was 55% in high school.

Nottingham is the guy I wanted to see at QB. I'm growing to love and hate Nunes at the same time, but I'm going to support Nunes for the time being as long as he is our starter. I think he needs to improve though if we're going to stick with him. I hope he does.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - yvonne - 10-17-2012

I know statistics don't tell the whole story, and that we haven't seen many practices, but looking only at those numbers, I can't help think that Shaw thinks the numbers are like golf or cross country scoring.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - stan01 - 10-17-2012

Another interesting statistic (I know, with a grain of salt): one quarterback has 26 TD, 18 INT.

Does anyone know what level of competition each QB faced in high school?  Small rural league, 6A league in large city, ESPN televised games, etc.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - Rando - 10-17-2012

Table fail.

Nottingham had tougher competition in High School according to Maxpreps team rankings, but it's not by much. Nottingham was facing teams with an avg state ranking of 189 in comparison to Nunes opp avg ranking of 214.

If you take both opponents four toughest matchups, here are the numbers:

Nunes: 39/85 (46%), 115.75 YPG, 1 TD, 7 INT, 46.75 Passer Rating avg
Nottingham: 80/127 (63%), 278.25 YPG, 13 TD, 3 INT, 101 Passer Rating avg

Again, I'm not drawing conclusions. I'm just posting what excel is telling me. BTW, Nottingham's passing completion ratio was off. His high school ratio wasn't 70 but 65%. The error was because the website I took it from had him 23/13 in one game, which is impossible. I fixed what I assume to be a simple mistake and flipped it.

Nottingham did much better against his four toughest opponents. Both teams were 1-3 however.

(10-17-2012, 09:37 PM)Rando90 link Wrote:Table fail.

Each row must be enclosed in [ tr ][ /tr ] (without the spaces). Each data item within a row must be enclosed in [ td ][ /td ] (ditto). Fixed it for you.

Note: Even with the fix, since the table is pretty wide, it will look awful until you make your window wide enough that the lines don't wrap. Rando90 might want to remove some of the excess digits of precision from the decimals to make it narrower.

Re: The Future at Quarterback - Rando - 10-17-2012

I don't know if I have to manually put [table ][tr ][td ] in every item and row, but if you have a quick fix for this, here is the data. It's prettier now.

Well, somebody or something has to put it in. I did it with emacs global replace: added tr td (in brackets) at the start of each line, replaced each Tab character with /td td, and added /td /tr at the end of each line.
