WBB: Stanford 61 UCLA 49 - 81alum - 12-20-2020

Preview:

This is the first serious test of our team this year.  UCLA is 5-1 after losing narrowly to Arizona.  Against common opponents, UCLA beat USC by 21 points--we just beat them by 20.  UCLA is ranked 11.

UCLA's greatest weakness is that they have had only 8 players play this year--so if the game is fast paced and physical, and if a lot of fouls are called on both sides--we would have the advantage.

Last year in our first game they beat us at home behind the play of Onyenwere who had 29 points.  Osborne, Chou, and Dean (since graduated) went 0-12 from three point range and they still beat us 79-69.  When we played them again in the tournament Tara had us ready, and we held Onyenwere to 14.  Lexie, who had been quiet in our first game, had 28 in our win.

UCLA has some very skilled players.  Since last year Dean has graduated but UCLA does not seem to be phased by that so far--Charisma Osborne has 26 assists to 9 turnovers, and is leading the team with 17 ppg.  She hits treys at 34% and is 18/18 of her free throws.  As with our own sophomores, she is a vastly improved player over a year ago.

Michaela Onyenwere tore us up in our first game last year, and focusing the defense on her as we did in our tournament game may leave others free to roam.  Onyenwere is a great all-around player who has added the three point shot to her arsenal--making 6/14 this year to go with her 16.5 ppg overall.  She is only 5'11" which is unusual for a forward but her agility and versatility makes her difficult to guard.

Natalie Chou, the transfer from Baylor, is playing well in her redshirt senior year.  She is scoring 37% of her treys and 11 ppg overall.

Lauryn Miller and Lyndsey Corsaro round out the starters--both very experienced players, as is Chantel Horvat who was made a starter against and started two games but did not play against Cal last night.  Is she out?  Is UCLA down to 7 players?

UCLA is a more experienced team than we are with more seniors and juniors in key rolls, but appears to lack very much depth.  Close has been playing every player she has on the roster for 20 minutes or more each.  This must make it difficult for Close to get her team to maintain its defensive intensity for the whole game--we might see something like we did at USC--that each quarter gets a little easier for our offense to operate.

All in all, this will be a very tough challenge.

Horvat sat out with an ankle injury.  Monday play Unknown.    Yes ucla is playing with 7 or with Horvat 8 scholarship players.  Two opted out and their two Aussie Frosh couldn’t come.  Which remains a mystery as our three Aussie athletes came

Onyenwere came out with a shoulder injury yesterday but bet she will be awesome as usual.

Sounds like we should press them from the get go.  Run them ragged with our depth.  Take it to them in the paint to get them in foul trouble.

Looking forward to this game.  It will give us a good measure of our NC prospects.

I am looking forward to this game as well. I wish I could be at Pauley to watch. But the only thing it measures is where the team is on December 21. It's only game 7 of the season. The team is still working out their chemistry and roles and the coaches are still tinkering with the rotation. Lots of development can happen for Stanford (and its opponents) between now and March.

An update:
Colorado had to cancel their game with ASU today and just now Oregon State cancelled their game with Washington State

Looks like Oregon State WBB has a Covid case. https://www.buildingthedam.com/2020/12/20/22192491/oregon-state-wbb-beavers-washington-postponed-covid-19-coronavirus-cancelled

It's OSU vs. Washington that's postponed/cancelled. OSU already played WSU -- and lost(!).

Whoops thanks

RE: WBB: Stanford @ UCLA 12pm Monday - 81alum - 12-21-2020

Almost ready to go at this odd time of day.  At least I turned in my grades for the semester hours ago and can focus a bit more on fun :)  At least, lets HOPE this one is fun!

RE: WBB: Stanford @ UCLA 12pm Monday - Lorcan - 12-21-2020

Washington State putting on a show so far against what was vaunted as a much better defensive Oregon team, with a 27-22 lead midway through the 2nd Quarter.

Oregon trails at the half against the Cougars, 37-32. A surprise brewing up in Pullman so far as we get ready for Stanford to tip off.

Trivia. Emily Bessoir is the UCLA Frosh from Germany However her grandfather was the long time coach at Scranton and her Dad an All American at Scranton.
Dad went to Germany to play pro.
Emily’s game reminds me of Alanna Smith

Prechtel and Jerome have already been subbed in so far, but no Brink yet. Is she healthy?

She just checked in. Maybe foul protection?

Some of these whistles are making no sense to me; few replays. But then again, hardly slept last night worried about this game and can't see straight, so...

Brink got in there, later than her usual rotation, but man she had some real nice places in her limited time.  A few nice passes, and another block.

WSU up one on Oregon 6 1/2 minutes left

2 fouls on Brink

Turnovers killing us
4 pts this qtr

RE: WBB: Stanford @ UCLA 12pm Monday - TheFarm07 - 12-21-2020

We definitely left at least 6-8 points on the court with some missed layups and shot clock violations. Our offense needs to adapt to better defenses; UCLA has done a good job of clogging the lanes

RE: WBB: Stanford @ UCLA 12pm Monday - 81alum - 12-21-2020

Well the first quarter was brilliant, and the second quarter terrible.  The refs are letting a lot of contact inside go.  And Close knows how to take advantage of that.  At times it looked like a mugging under the basket.

We hit 57% of our treys and outrebounded them 26-18, and only have a 5 point lead at the half.  We shot 42% to their 29%.  Which means we shot much better from outside than from inside--we missed a lot of layups.  A true defensive slugfest in the second quarter.  Onyenwere has missed 3 treys but is so deadly from inside.  And we have 7 turnovers to their 2.

I am hoping that UCLA does not have the stamina to maintain that defensive intensity to the end of the game.  We shall see.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ UCLA 12pm Monday - Lorcan - 12-21-2020

In news elsewhere, Oregon survived a buzzer beating three from Washington State to stay unbeaten on the season. If they didn't shoot 60% from three, they're likely looking at their first loss.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love watching Anna Wilson on the floor?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ UCLA 12pm Monday - martyup - 12-21-2020

Too many missed layups.   What a sloppy 2nd Q.  We need to keep up the pace and wear the Bruins out.
