More MLB trivia - Phogge - 12-29-2020
Mick brought up some names from an old Seals team. One was Joe Sprinz. He used to chair the July meeting of the SF Oltimers Baseball Association which was dedicated to giving away bats, balls and gloves to City kids.
What was Joe’s connection to the 1939 Treasure Island World’s Fair?

Attempted to catch a ball from a blimp as Bobbbbb says. Tried to set a world record. The ball bounced off his glove and basically destroyed his face.

A few weeks prior to the 1939 World's Fair stunt, Sprinz and a teammate caught a ball dropped from the 400 foot "Tower of the Sun" pavilion. The ball dropped from the dirigible traveled 800 feet and went through Sprinz's glove at 145 mph, hitting him full in the face. Knocked out eight teeth, fractured his jaw, lacerations across his face.

Here’s one: Name the modern day (post1904) pitcher who holds the record for consecutive innings pitched without giving up an HR.

I'll go with Orel - only because he had a long scoreless inning streak that I remember.

No. Think heavy sinker.
Orel did break Drysdales scoreless inning streak record. Thing is, both should have given up a run against the Giants in the streak, only to be saved by the ump. Drysdale when he hit Dietz with the bases loaded and Harry Windlestadt said Dietz didn’t try to get out of the way. The only time I’ve ever seen that called. I don’t remember what it was that saved Orel. Maybe Phogge or Bobkk do.

I didn’t know that about Orel
But I sure recall that about Drysdale
I ump’d about 7 years. Never called not getting out of the way. Players were 14 and younger. But every so often a manager or fan would complain.

I remember playing little league, and a pitch was coming inside and I ducked. The ball hit the top of my batting helmet, and the opposing manager argued that I intentionally let the pitch hit me. And this was in the minor leagues, as I was not very good. Dopey coaches at all levels. . . .

An old time Umpire taught me something that I only got to use once. Player got hit on the hand, I say take your base. Manager comes roaring out " the hands are part of the bat"
My comeback from the old ump:
"Do you have children? Yes he said I said "when they were born did they have a bat in their hands? " He looked at me like I was crazy then LOL.

Answer, btw, is Greg Minton. The great Moon Man. Didn’t give up an HR for something like 269 innings over almost 3 years. John Stearns broke the streak.

I remember hitting the dirt. Bat stayed in air. Ball hit bat and bounced to pitcher. Rough AB.

Minton was known to his teammates as Moon Man or “Moonie.” A bit goofy in a funny way.
Earlier Dave Kingman’s teammates called him Moon Man But for different reasons.
