New Low - martyup - 12-30-2020
Oklahoma State's best receiver, Wallace, had a great first half in the Cheez-it bowl. Then he decided, apparently, that he had done enough to impress the pro scouts and decided not to play in the second half. It was a close game in the end and Miami almost came back to win it.
To me this is a new low in sportsmanship and team loyalty. IMO, the coach should have sent him to the showers and given him a bus ticket home.

What would you expect from the Cheez-it Bowl. . . .Pretty pathetic, I agree.

I'd have kicked him out of the program right then & there. Hit the showers, leave the facility, and find your own way home.
It's one thing to quit on your team before a bowl game. It's entirely another to quit on them in the middle of the game.
This is worse than Sammy Sosa walking out on the Cubs before their last game of the season.

ESPN is reporting that Mike Gundy said it was his decision to have Wallace only play the first half.
Also, Wallace missed half of the 2019 with an ACL injury and they both saw D'Eriq King suffer what looked like a serious knee injury in the 1st quarter.

Gundy is claiming it's on him and was preplanned to protect Wallace and allow younger kids to get experience in a bowl game. Not sure I'm buying it, especially from Gundy. My guess is the preplanning took place in the locker room at halftime.

That really is low [if true]. It's one thing to let your team know you are sitting out a meaningless bowl game. It's another to have them include you in the game planning and prep, which means taking reps away from others, and then bail on them mid-game. Not sure it will matter to NFL teams though.

When I was in high school, one of our WRs took himself out of the game, claiming to the coach that the other team's DBs were aiming for his knees. The WR was, frankly, a jerk and was in a trash talk marathon with the opposing side. Our coach agreed, took him out in the second half, and put me in instead. Wonderful.

A similar event occurred during a bowl game involving USC vs Fresno State in the earlier 90's. USC had as always a wide receiver who put up big numbers, who decided to sit out the second half and laugh and have a good time with his teammates on the bench while Fresno State pounded away with a power running game running off tackle with both the half back and full back carry the ball. The USC coach Larry Smith was fired after the game. Fresno State won and was coached by Jim Sweeny(sp). The USC player was a senior and was projected has a high draft pick.

I agree it's a low move, especially if not pre-cleared with the coach.
Where I hesitate is in declaring it worse than not participating at all. Yes, the reasons you cite are legit. But otoh, at least the player gave his teammates something in the post-season bowl game. [I get why people here want to believe what the OSU receiver did was worse than bailing altogether . . . just not certain I'm "in" on that conclusion]. Both are bad in my book. And both are understandable (though sitting out entirely is more understandable).
BTW, if the game was a blowout at halftime, would that change your analysis?

I believe that he Tweeted from the bathroom at halftime that, after much prayer and consultation with his family, he felt it was time to concentrate on preparing for the NFL draft, and that he wished his teammates the best.

OKST was up 21-10 at halftime. To me the score does not matter. When you suit up to go into battle with your brothers, you don't quit the team before the final whistle. I actually draw the line at the beginning of the season and I don't like players quitting before the end of the season to prepare for the NFL.

OKST was up 21-10 at halftime. To me the score does not matter. When you suit up to go into battle with your brothers, you don't quit the team before the final whistle. If the game were an utter blowout at halftime, the coach choosing to rest him for the second half might at least be somewhat plausible. But it seems that wasn't the case.

The sideline reporter repeatedly said that it wasn't a coach decision and was not injury related. She said it was purely a player decision. BTW, he was joking and jesting with fellow players on the sideline during the second half. Having a good time while his team was battling to hold onto a dwindling lead.
