WBB: Stanford 70 Oregon 63 - 81alum - 01-07-2021

Preview:

Everyone knows the WNBA players that Oregon lost after its absolutely dominant season last year.  But casual fans don't yet know the talent that Oregon still has or that has recently joined them.  My impression after watching a couple of their games--including their recent loss to UCLA--is that they are an extremely talented team that is still quite young and has not yet completely melded.  Of course, in their recent loss to UCLA they were missing two starters--Sedona Prince and Taylor Chavez--who for all I know could be playing against us on Friday.  They had a furious run at the end of the UCLA game that nearly tied it up--without two starters.  If they are healthy, I think they still need to be considered our toughest competition in the conference.

So who are the new Ducks?  There are some old names in the mix.  Erin Boley (formerly of Notre Dame) is leading their very balanced scoring with 13 ppg, and is hitting 45% of her treys.  Nyara Sabally--the younger and oft-injured sister of our nemesis--comes in second at 12 ppg and leads in rebounding with 8.

Te-Hina Paopao, who has one of the coolest names in sports, is a remarkable freshman point guard--hitting 40% of her treys and with a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio.  And she is only going to get better.  To start a freshman point guard and have that kind of immediate success is simply astounding.

Taylor Mikesell continues the Ducks' pattern of recruiting from other big name WBB programs.  She transferred from Maryland and was granted immediate eligibility for this year--her junior year.  She is a 5'11" guard who so far is hitting 47% of her treys.

Sedona Prince, a talented 6'7" redshirt sophomore, started at Texas only to break her leg and sit out the season, and then transferred to Oregon, although she had to sit out a year.  So that means three of the Duck's most talented players came from other programs, and this is in part how they have reloaded so quickly.  It is, in a way, a kind of national all-star team rather than a team of talent developed exclusively by Kelley Graves.  Prince did not play against UCLA and I did not hear the reason why.

Taylor Chavez and Jaz Shelley each have started 4 games for Oregon this year, giving Oregon yet more quality perimeter options.

As a team, Oregon has 4 players averaging in double digit scoring.  With effective three point shooting outside, and size inside, they are a team that cannot be subjected easily to Tara's scouting report defense--there are no weak offensive links.  If we play player to player, it is going to be a series of difficult matchups.  This is, of course, how Oregon beat us three times last year--we lost those match ups.

All that said, UCLA did beat them.  In that game, UCLA's two stars had near career nights, with Onyenwere scoring 33 points on 60% shooting.  The UCLA zone was just not up to stopping her.  It reminded me of what our own McPhee did to them a few years back, also scoring 33.  Meanwhile, Oregon's comeback was led by freshman  Angela Dugalic--a 6'4" forward who looked as confident and as physical as I have ever seen in a freshman big.  To my eye, she was offensively an improvement over the absent Sedona Prince.

Dugalic, PaoPao, Mikesell, Prince, and freshman reserves Sydney Parrish and Maddie Scherr are all playing in their first season for the Ducks.  It is scary to think how good this team may become as they jell and mature.  But as their loss to UCLA showed, they have not yet reached their full potential as a team.

To beat Oregon, we have to sharply cut down on their perimeter shooting while not getting into foul trouble against their bigs.  And we will need our own strong perimeter shooting.  I would be shocked if their zone lets Belibi have a good game.  Our three point shooting cannot be "off" if we expect a win.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - CompSci87 - 01-07-2021

Let me point out that scouting report defense doesn't simply mean to find an offensive player who's a poor shooter and sag off of her. That is just one possible tactic, and it's only in the game plan when there is such a player.

When it works it can work very well, so it gets our attention, like in one famous first half against Baylor and Brittney Griner when Stanford left one Baylor starter completely unguarded so that her defender could sag into the paint and double Griner at all times. That time of course it only worked until Kim Mulkey benched the poor shooter and put in someone else who didn't freeze up when left wide open.

In general, scouting report defense means the Stanford defenders  learn both the opponent's plays and the strengths and weaknesses of each player, and Stanford coaches tailor both the overall game plan and how each player is to be guarded accordingly. So there's a lot to it!

If you follow womens basketball recruiting you know that the Ducks had a monster class last year, signing five of the top players in the nation. If you are going to beat them, this is probably the year before those players mature.

I mean our classes the last three years have not been chopped liver.
2018: #14 Lexi Hull; #18 Jenna Brown
2019: #1 Haley Jones; #15 Ashton Prechtel; #19 Francesca Belibi
2020: #3 Cameron Brink
2021: #11 Brooke Demetre; #19 Kiki Iriafen

So, next year we will have 8 top-20 players on the team at once, 6 of whom will be sophomores or more experienced.  Oregon had 5 top-25 players in the class of 2020, but none in the classes of 2018, 2019, or 2021.  I would rather be us, with consistent high-level recruiting across classes rather than a monster class between less impressive ones.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - Hulk01 - 01-07-2021

The Duck's offense succeeds off of threes and put backs, mostly from Saballly.   Against outside defenders as good as Anna, Kiana, and the two Hulls, and against our defensive rebounding and length inside, that strategy doesn't work as well.

I see a Milwaukee Bucks' approach to defending the Ducks: pressure the three point shooters, crowd the key to take away the layups and put backs, and concede the midrange jumpers.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - TheFarm07 - 01-07-2021

Just continuing off of BostonCard's post, even though Oregon will be a tough match-up, probably our hardest yet, we have plenty of weapons for Kelly Graves to worry about coming into tomorrow's game as well. Our team is tough to defend, particularly if Brink is able to play. Yes, we will need to be on our game, but so do the Ducks.

I am just hoping COVID concerns won't force the postponement of this match-up; it will be another good barometer of where we are. I am also itching for payback after their 3 convincing victories over us last season.

The average recruiting ranking for the five freshman Ducks:
12, 14, 19, 21, 30.

In this 2022 class, we feel good about signing at least three of:
1 (Betts), 4 (Gardiner), 6 (Rice), 7 (Nnaji), and 15 (Londyn Jones)

In the immortal words of Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glenn Ross, we still have to "get them to sign on the line which is dotted."

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - BobK - 01-07-2021

For 2021 the rankings for our recruits from CA dropped when they couldn't play travel back east or in Texas. Out of sight out of mind.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - Spiny_Norman - 01-07-2021

What should we expect from Oregon's defense? Mostly zone? Do they pressure the ball?

I expect that Stanford will not be able to run as much as some other games. Oregon shoots better than any opponent yet by a large margin. Fewer missed shots means fewer transition opportunities. Stanford will have to generate points in the half court game.

Brink was suppose to be evaluated by a doctor this past Monday.  Is Tara keeping the prognosis confidential leading up to Friday's game or did I somehow miss someone posting about the doctor report.

My point wasn't that they have recruited better in general than we have. My point was that this is a good year to play them because their most highly rated recruits are young.

Top 5 movie riff scenes of all time.  "Put that . . . "
Lemon:  "The leads are weak."

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - BobK - 01-07-2021

Prince almost certainly won’t play. I know famous last words
Ucla has cancelled for at least tomorrow as they don’t have 7 healthy scholarship players. Presume Horvat still out and now another
So instead of 6 games tomorrow just 2 with 4 canceled

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - Spike - 01-07-2021

Prince has a stress fracture and is apparently out until 1/16.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - BobK - 01-07-2021

A rumor at least for now Osborne abd Onyenwere are hurting

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - WBB fan - 01-07-2021

Has anyone information on Brink's status?

Points per game

Stanford frosh class, 2019-20

Jump, 4.6

Oregon frosh class, 2020-21
Pappao, 12.1
Parrish, 6.3
Dugalic, 4.9
Scherr, 3.3
Watson, 2.4

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon in Santa Cruz, Friday 11:30am - Hulk01 - 01-08-2021

Perhaps the keys:

Transition defense off of turnovers
The Ducks are averaging almost 21 points a game off of opponent turnovers,
and a net 13 point advantage.

Stop second chance points
No stats here, but against UCLA and WSU Sabally thrived on second chance points.
(Dugalic, too).
Keep their bigs off the boards.

Pressure Oregon's three three-point shooters
Boley, Mikesell, and Papao are combining of almost 20 ppg on threes.
Pressure from Anna, Kiana, and the Hulls becomes critical.
