Actually, I don't think Walton is THAT bad. Yes, he's definitely annoying in a lot of ways but I find him amusing at times. That said, who's the worst? Whoever the play by play guy is for this game. I think his name is "Kevin" and he's broadcast Stanford baseball games. May be the cheesiest play by play hack I've ever heard - he's certainly in the top ten.

One of the most annoying qualities a play by play guy can have is to overhype. Drives me nuts. Which is why I watch a lot of sports with the sound off. Been switching between hoops and football game. And I agree wit( you. He is not good.....

Guys - Kevin is a Stanford alum and a great guy. He does play-by-play for a number of teams, including the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Yep, it's guys like Kevin Danna (just discovered his name) who try to compensate for a complete lack of talent by sing-songing/hyping up everything. An example of the polar opposite is Ted Robinson, whom I enjoy listening to. Danna really should be fired as he's just an embarrassment.

Or even better the GREAT Dave Flemming. One of America’s best play by play announcers. He’s tremendous doing Giant games on the radio and he’s a terrific TV play-by-play guy in every sport he does. I’m biased of course – primarily because I just think the Giants announcing team on both radio and TV is so incredibly gifted. But Flem is tremendous in my opinion.

We are joking right?
I have literally stopped watching games because Walton was on the scene. As long as the announcers are covering action on the court I will accept any style.

Walton is so bad that the ESPN types now treat him like a joke. That might be OK if he was covering the MWC or the Big12. However since his primary role is to cover Pac-12 games, he turns the Pac-12 on ESPN into a joke too. The conference has enough problems without getting saddled with ESPN's clown for every high profile basketball game.

And if my viewership pattern is similar to the national viewers, he negatively impacts the Pac-12's reputation and market value every time he covers a game.

Walton could spend the entire game talking about taking mushrooms at Dead shows and I would take him over Danna. Walton is the clown who knows he's a clown. However, Danna is the kind of guy who THINKS he's a pro.

The fact he's a Stanford alum makes his performances even more unforgivable. He must be a smart guy but has no clue.

Come on, guys. Yes, he's a bit over the top, but there's no crowd in a good sized building. The atmosphere is weird. Maybe he'll listen to himself and tone it down a bit. I thought his play by play was just fine, accurate and timely. He's got the most important talent down. He will get better, methinks.

Indeed, that was a hell of a play deserving of props by the announcer. That said, I still cringed when Danno called it.

Danno comes from the same school of announcing as that guy who blew the call on Mark Bradford's epic catch. Both are blowhards. Conversely, I was just watching the USC/ASU game. Even when the game was a blowout in the first half, Ted Robinson made the experience interesting by actually having something intelligent to say. Moreover, he doesn't make the game about him...or have that annoying sing-songy/hype-filled delivery.

I surely didn't find the announcing today to be bothersome, and certainly not enough to post about it.
I enjoyed Kevin Danna for years on KZSU.
(But, if you listen to KZSU while watching the game, the actual situation is sometimes stretched "We've got a full crowd today" etc)

I do agree about Dave Flemming. He's very good, professional, and knowledgable. He'd play the straight guy in a comedy routine.
