Will this be the end of the streak? - BostonCard - 02-10-2021

After 44 consecutive years, I am starting to wonder whether our streak of national titles is in jeopardy this year.  It is such a messed up year, and unlike in previous years, while we have a number of good teams that will contend for a title, I don't think there is a dominant team that is expected to run away with a championship (like WVB and WSoc last year).  So, this might be a year where we strike out.

Is there a men's gymnastic season this year? I am predicting Tara will get her third Natty!

I think the favorites to keep the streak alive are men's gymnastics and women's water polo.

Men's gymnastics is the defending national champ from 2019, was ranked #1 when the season was suspended last year, returns many of the leaders from that team and brings in the #1 recruit in the country, Colt Walker. But leading all-around gymnast Brody Malone is sitting out this season.

WWP is always among top teams in the country. They have played in the national championship match for 10 consecutive years.

Several teams COULD win a title as just one is enough not too worried about the streak....
IF every sport plays for a title.

1) New COVID19 variants could force an acceleration that might cause the NCAA to cancel the seasons/playoffs
2) Outbreak(s) on the Stanford campus centered around DAPER staff or students could force a Stanford team or all teams out of title participation.

If the Stanford AD can navigate the potential COVID outbreak then all should be OK.

Maybe Stanford should relocate all its sports teams to Iowa?  The state of Iowa has lifted all of its Covid restrictions on everything.

Will this be the last year of a NCAA men's gymnastics championship?  They are down to about 12 teams in the country. When they lose NCAA status, I wonder if Bernard will cut this program to go along with the other 11 he cut.

Stanford Women are ranked top three in XC. They have a shot.
