2021 Football Record -Way early predictions - Stanfordindians1again - 02-17-2021

What do we go in 2021?  What say ye?

Is McKee the guy? and will he be "ready enough" to win us games?

QB1 is obviously important, but my worries extend across the defense. In 2020 the defense was, statistically, one of the worst amongst the Power 5 teams. But they managed to come up with big plays at key times:

Game 4 vs UW -- Stanford up 31-23 in the 4th quarter when Austin Jones loses a fumble that is returned to the Stanford 10. 1st and goal UW is called for holding. 2nd down and goal at the 20, UW runs for 1 yard and called for holding. 2nd down and goal at the 29, UW throws incomplete pass. 3rd down and goal at the 29, UW runs for 2 yards. UW has to settle for 45 yard field goal. (Stanford offense takes over after the kickoff at its own 12 and runs out the clock.)

Game 5 vs OSU -- Stanford up 27-24 after a Toner field goal late in the 4th quarter. Jet Toner kicks off OOB and OSU takes over at its own 35 with 1:48 left in the game. OSU converts a 4th and 2 and has 2nd down and 10 at the Stanford 35 with 55 seconds left. OSU QB scrambles to the Stanford 16 where Gabe Reid forces a fumble, recovered by Caleb Robinson. (Stanford takes two knees to end the game.)

Game 6 vs UCLA -- Stanford up 48-47 in 2nd OT. UCLA goes for two and Stanford stuffs the run. Prior to that stuff, the UCLA RB, Brittain Brown, rushed for 219 yards on 29 carries.

I don't know if the bend-and-break-but-don't-break-when-it-really-counts approach is sustainable for 2021. I expect somewhere between 5 and 7 wins unless the defense takes a major step forward.

I think we will be lucky to get 5 wins.  The defense will not be good.  There are too many questions about the offense to count on it to make up for a dreadful defense.

I expect we will beat Vanderbilt and WSU, and probably two of KSU, OSU, Cal, and ?  Yeah, as I look at the schedule, I am thinking 3-9 is a real possibility.

I would say 6-6, admitting it could be worse.
I agree with the sentiments that the defense will not be very good, and without Mills (Fehoko would help too) the offense may not be able to put enough points on the board to make up for it.
A lot will depend on McKee's development.

Worry about McKee and can only hope his 2020 experience will help him prepare for 2021
Worry a lot about the defense, and its depth

However, Vanderbilt, KSU, WSU and OSU all have bigger challenges and/or problems.
That gives me a floor of 4 wins

For me, UCB, UCLA, UW, ASU, UofO, and UoU are all in a zone where things could break either way.
I would prefer to project that Stanford beats Cal and gets 2 of the other 5. 
That's 7 wins.

And IMO, Notre Dame, USC are out of reach in 2021.

I see 7-5 as a reasonable result with anything above 8 wins requiring quite a bit of good luck.

Important to remember that with an odd year most of the challenging games are at home, so that could help get a win or two.
7-5 is my expectation, but that is based on my (hope) McKee has to improve and the staff can build game plans to optimize his skills rather than serve as the last minute replacement for a game plan assembled for Mills.

7-5 is my prediction. I think our defense will be better with a full season of Miezan, Bonner, Jordan Fox and others who were injured, but if Booker and someone else on our thin DL gets injured, all bets are off. Our LB and CB position groups have quality depth, but DL is dangerously thin. If we can find a grad transfer to add depth to the DL, we should.

10-2.  Stanford will amaze.  The new OC will have Shanahan-like offensive prowess, making the most of those Stanford-qualified football player minds.

And then...I woke up.  5-7, not much better than that.  Lost too much talent, playcalling too predictable, not enough reps, going to be a tough season.

While having a productive qb is important, in 2021 Stanford needs an offense that is efficient and one that controls the ball and the tempo. What we saw in 2020 was a defense that wasn't very good but that could deliver one or two stops a game. The trick was to make those few stops be enough. In 2021 we probably have a similar situation on defense. The DL won't be as good, probably, because of fewer bodies. We need an offense that scores touchdowns (not field goals) and that runs the ball effectively even when the opponent knows that is the plan. Most college teams stop themselves a few times per game. If our defense can deliver a couple of additional stops we can win most of the games on our schedule, but ONLY if we are offensively more efficient than our opponent. We have to limit the opponents number of possessions. If our defense spends lots of time on the field, we will be 4-8. If we dominate the TOP we can turn that around. If we dominate the TOP AND score on almost every possession we can be 10-2.

In order to be efficient we need a qb who can throw the deep ball when the defense is crowding the LOS to stop the run. If we can't run, even if we are successful in throwing the ball it will be hard to win. Our defense will wear down and that will create a situation where our offense has to score every time it gets the ball, because our opponent certainly will. I have seen that movie before. It is exciting at times, but in the end the record isn't good. Ideally, we could rely on our defense to save the offense when they aren't scoring on almost every possession. That won't be the case in 2021.

The surprising Cardinal achieve an 11-1 record, with the only loss being an upset defeat to Utah, which has Stanford's number. They beat down the Condoms once again in the CCG.

The P12 still gets no respect, we don't make the playoffs and take out our frustrations on a Michigan team in the Rose Bowl.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it (until proven wrong).
