Thanks. I remember Gene Washington as a local TV personality when I was a kid, but I was too young to really know much about him at Stanford or otherwise. I'm not even sure I realized he went to Stanford. I think I just vaguely knew that he had been a 49er.

Gene was a classmate of mine, though I never met him in undergrad school. I met him a couple of times later when we were both working at Stanford. Very gracious, friendly guy.

In the 70's Gene Washington's home was on Washington Street , San Francisco.

Great article. All I remembered about Gene Washington was when there were two wide receivers by that name in the NFL at the same time. It's nice to learn about the one from Stanford and all he accomplished!

Nice article. I think the family friend mentioned, Don Muchmore, had two sons who also attended Stanford around that time.

Great player, great guy and...the best posture of any human I have ever encountered.

On Jim Plunkett's first series ever...as a sophomore against San Jose...he hooked up with GW for a 60+-yard TD and you could tell things were going to get a lot better...and soon.

(I may be misremembering the details of that play but it was a great one)

Plunkett threw four that day with a couple of other bombs. One to Jack Lassiter.

The article writer didn’t do his homework. Washington enrolled in 1965. Stanford hadn’t run the single wing since 1939. In the interim Stanford had four T formation All American Qb’s... Albert, Kerkorian, Garrett and Brodie. Stanford was one of the few schools known for passing. Nobody in the PAC 8 was running the single wing anymore.

You probably didn't see Plunkett in the 1967 game because he redshirted that year. Anyway you didn't miss much. I wished I had missed it but it would have been difficult because I was on the field. You are probably referring to the 1968 game.

Jon Ritchie, Greg Comella, Ryan Hewitt, Daniel Marx. Can't wait until Stanford once again makes the Fullback position a focal point of the offense, as they did in their championship seasons of '12, '13 and '15. I have high hopes for this Coco kid coming in from Utah.
