WBB: Stan 80 ASU 41 - 81alum - 02-18-2021

Preview:

We last played ASU way back on January 3, and won that game 68-60.  It was one of Belibi's best games back when she was starting with 23 points.  As we discussed on this board, however, overall the win was too close for our satisfaction considering ASU is not an elite team--perhaps there were signs of Colorado to come.  We had great rebounding but significant issues with turnovers, and other than Belibi and Williams no one else was very productive on offense.  Going 4/19 from three point range was not helpful, and allowing Jaddan Simmons and Taya Hanson open shots kept ASU in the game.

Here is the write up from last time:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=21327

Since January 3rd, ASU has had six postponements, and went 3-4 in their other games.  Their wins have been over Colorado, Southern Utah, and their best win was their last game 67-61 over WSU.  They have lost to Utah, UCLA, USC, and most embarrassingly to Washington.  Massey has them at #50.

If it were not for CTT and the reliable history of ASU always making things difficult for us, I would be confident that we have the talent to prevail easily.  But we never prevail easily over ASU.  And...they seem to be coming on strong at exactly the right moment--beating WSU was not a small accomplishment for them.

We are a somewhat different team than we were on January 3.  In that game, Belibi had 33 minutes and Brink did not play at all.

After our close game with Oregon it is unsettling to see UCLA dismantle them.

LET'S GO CARD!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Arizona State Friday 7pm Pac 12 Networks - 81alum - 02-19-2021

Off to an 11-0 start.  Almost makes me worry--another recipe for blowing a big lead :P

Seriously though, our defense looks absolutely awesome so far.

First I thought no one was going to score and that someone had greased up the ball (the way both teams were losing it).

Jones with 2 quick turnovers gets pulled.  Belibi comes in and gets anther 2 quick turnovers.  Arrrggg.  Yes we lead 11-0 but we should play for perfection.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Arizona State Friday 7pm Pac 12 Networks - TheRicker - 02-19-2021

I see the goal as early domination, continuing in 2nd half, to allow starters to rest in prep for Arizona.

13-1.  Dang, there goes the shutout.

Refs handing out fouls like it's Christmas in Tempe.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Arizona State Friday 7pm Pac 12 Networks - martyup - 02-19-2021

19-7 at the end of the 1st.  So why am I slightly disappointed?  Spoiled fan I guess.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Arizona State Friday 7pm Pac 12 Networks - 81alum - 02-19-2021

ASU gets its first basket with less than a minute left in the quarter.  19-7 after one.  ASU's defense has not been terrible, or else our lead would have been enormous.

12 points can vanish in a hurry.  We need to sustain this defense and not let up.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Arizona State Friday 7pm Pac 12 Networks - TheFarm07 - 02-19-2021

We lead 19-7 after one quarter; if not for a last second 3 pointer from ASU, we would have held them scoreless from made field goals as their first 4 points were from the FT line.

I like our defense, though the Sun Devils are not known for their offensive prowess. Despite shutting them out defensively, we could not expand our lead for most of the quarter until late, due to six turnovers.

Against an aggressive defense, we need to be confident and assured. I saw a lot of uncertainty from our players which resulted in a lot of those turnovers when they didn't know what to do and turned it over

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Arizona State Friday 7pm Pac 12 Networks - PVTree - 02-19-2021

That late 3 pointer is the only bucket made by the solar satans in the first quarter. That's acceptable defense ;)

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Arizona State Friday 7pm Pac 12 Networks - TheFarm07 - 02-19-2021

Prechtel makes an appearance!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Arizona State Friday 7pm Pac 12 Networks - 81alum - 02-19-2021

Yes, nice to see Prechtel back.

Jump is having a great game!  Not only 10 points, but her defense looks like it has been turned up a notch, and she is making shots from all three levels and not just treys.  Looking more and more like a complete player.  Wonderful to see.

Well when we shoot 70% and they shoot 21% I expect we will lead.  40-18 at the half.  But we still haven't broken the game completely open.  A let down in the 3rd could result in a game like our last against ASU.  Hopefully we can widen the lead in the third and let a lot of people play in the 4th.
