On thing I like a lot about Ratcliffe is he seems to play the best players, regardless of what class they are. I think it's a big reason we always attract top talent in recruiting.  This starting lineup has a lot of underclass players, probably in large part because it's early in the season and a good time to experiment, but I'm sure they've also earned it.  No school has lost the talent we have over the past few years, and I think this could be a transition/rebuilding year, but you ever know what kind of talent your recruiting class might have.  Macario came in as the third ranked player in the class overall, and 2nd in Stanford class, but she ended up being the best player since Hamm that college has seen.

The livestream link posted by Spiny works perfectly with no mucking around.  (Thanks, Spiny!).   I'm listening to the second half while working from my 2 monitor home set-up.

Sadly Stanford is down 0-1 and Pepperdine is also winning on Shots-on-Goal 13-7.  Per Clardy, the lone goal came on a well developed attack with the score on a put-back after the initial block.  I'd love to hear commentary on how this young Stanford team is developing from folks who saw more of this game.

Paulsen just put a screamer on goal that was stopped by the Pepperdine defense so we are getting scoring opportunities.  Lots of substitutions and Pepperdine is bunkering down to make their lone goal stand up.  Only 10 minutes left in regulation.

Losing 0-1 in 80th minute. Being outshot 8-13. Disturbingly, being generally outquicked and dispossessed too easily of the ball. This is our first game, their 3rd, and it shows.

Equalizer in the 83rd minute from Sierra Enge!

So much for the bunker strategy - Stanford is keeping the ball in Pepperdine's half and passing well enough to create decent shots.

Foul called after hard contact against Hailey in Pepperdine's box and Stanford scores the go ahead on a penalty kick only ~3 minutes after their first goal.  Nice!

And that's the game ... Stanford comes from behind to beat Pepperdine 2-1.

After reading ca245's review, I guess Stanford had a wake-up call and I saw the right 25 minutes.

We won 2-1 on two goals in last 8 minutes, the second goal on a PK given when Haley went down in the penalty area. Without replay, it was hard to see exactly what happened. (That said, there were other occasions where Haley was taken down -- clearly IMO --  around the penalty area and no fouls were called.) Comment that we were outquicked and too easily dispossessed of the ball stands. We miss someone who can control things in the midfield and distribute the ball, like Sullivan or Macario.

Not bad on such limited practice

In other news, Lavelle subbed in for Macario as part of this 2nd half USWNT line-up change at the She Believes Cup.  Ouch!  Tough to defend for 60 minutes, play the US to a 0-0 tie, and then get hit with a fresh Press, Morgan and Lavelle in a line-up change.  Sucks to be Canada.

US wins 1-0 on a beautiful Lavelle goal woven through three defenders.  As I said, sucks to be Canada.

On the injury front, Naomi Girma will not play at all this season. She tore her ACL last fall. She expects to return to action this fall.

Well, it's really not that bad.
But, Canada is in a tough geographic region for W soccer.

Good point and as I'm particularly fond of British Columbia, I'll amend.

It really sucks to be a Canadian Defender playing the USWNT right now.  Otherwise I have nothing against our 51st state, providers of superior skiing, forestry products, milk (who knew?), source of reasonably priced prescription drugs and sayers of "aboot" - although I did enjoy this South Park tribute.
