Tiger injured in a rollover - magnus - 02-23-2021

Tiger Woods was involved in a rollover accident in LA this morning requiring the jaws of life for extraction through the front windshield.   He's currently in the hospital with injuries.

Hope it sounds worse than it is.

Hopefully it is only leg injuries, and not head or other critical injuries.

That looks really bad, like his car rolled down an embankment. Car looks very damaged but that kind of crash could lead to multiple injuries or re-injuries - not just the one's he's in surgery for.

Hoping for the best and that he recovers, as he has so many times, from multiple injuries.

It looks like he went up an embankment (he was driving fast).

Wow, I'm stunned and really saddened by this news.

For those who haven't seen it, here's Tiger's bio on the Stanford Men's Golf website:

Earlier reports that jaws of life were used have been corrected by county sheriffs office. Also reports are that he was conscious and that injuries were not life-threatening but he has been in surgery at UCLA for some period of time.

Prayers that he is going to be OK. Screw the future of his golf, just that he will be reasonably healthy

It seems the dude exercised some terrible judgment and paid the price for it. Hopefully the investigation doesn't reveal any controlled substances in him.

Based on a few tweets I saw, it looks like he was driving excessively fast for the road he was on, crossed over the opposite traffic lane, went through a barrier and crashed down an embankment.

I can't help but think it's possible the confusing and distracting visual technology in the vehicle he was driving played a role.

Ben Hogan suffered a near fatal crash traveling in heavy fog in Texas on his way to a tourney. 16 months later he won the US Open.

The speed limit was 45 mph, and his career, a Genesis GV80 has one of the best ADAS (Advanced Driver Assist) tools on the market.  No skid marks.  Must have been some extreme driving to get the GV80 rolled out all the way on that grass.

Woods just had his fifth back surgery, a microdiscectomy in December.  Now serious injuries to both legs.  Shattered ankle, two fractures, one of which is a compound fracture.

I hope he wasn't on painkillers and driving.  When he was pulled over in 2017, he had Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, alprazolam (Xanax), Zolpidem (Ambien) and a THC variant in his system.

Really praying he'll be okay.  I really hope he considers a car service after this.

I do wish Tiger the fastest possible recovery.  At the same time, I don't understand why anyone as rich as he is ever drives himself anywhere.  And he's far from the only extremely wealthy person to be injured or killed while driving or arrested for DUI.

If I had even 1% of Tiger's net worth, I would never drive again.

I have no idea what Tiger may or may not have been taking as medication. That said, many people just enjoy driving. I am one of them. I much prefer to drive myself rather than be a passenger. I am sure many "wealthy" people also enjoy having control over some aspect of their life without it being "moderated" by others. When they want to go somplace, they just do. No wait for the driver to get ready, etc.

Quote:Authorities said there was no immediate evidence that Woods was impaired. They checked for odor of alcohol or other signs that he was under the influence of a substance, but did not find any.

That of course doesn't mean that a urine tox screen at Harbor/UCLA won't come out positive, but nonetheless, we should not assume that he was impaired.  Apparently, that road is prone to accidents:

Quote:Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, who first arrived on the scene, said he sometimes catches people topping 80 mph in the 45 mph zone and that crashes are common there.

He’s lucky he didn’t kill himself or someone else.  Tiger needs help.

I haven't seen any evidence that he was impaired when he was driving.  Yes, he has a history of doing so, but we should probably not assume one way or another until it is reported.

RE: Tiger injured in a rollover - Jskass - 02-24-2021

regardless of whether impaired or not, he has a history with cars so I agree he should probably not drive other than around his own street. Likely driving too fast and perhaps distracted (no skid marks)? Either way, it's close to a miracle he's alive.

RE: Tiger injured in a rollover - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 02-24-2021

First of all, I do not believe Tiger was on pain medication yesterday morning.
However, ever since Tiger's 2009 adultery scandal, when it was revealed he regularly took Ambien to help him sleep I've assumed he was not adverse to taking pills. And following the surgeries he has had the past 10 years I am sure he received prescription pain medicine. Now considering yesterday's injuries/surgery going forward it is reasonable to assume he will have additional surgeries and in his life prescribed pain medications.
So, in my mind Tiger's biggest challenge will be dealing with the issue of pain medications.
