WSOC: STAN 5 UT 0 - oldalum - 02-26-2021

Oregon's first victory over us, ever.
We scored with 1 second left to make it look closer.
As I've said, it's a rebuilding year.

Lost Smith, Macario and to injury Girma. Tough times when you don’t have practice to fill the gaps

The roster changes are massive, but the team has other issues.

The last few years the women were quicker and faster at most field positions every game.   They then also enjoyed fantastic advantages in basic skills, shape discipline and finishing creativity.

In the first two games they appear merely comparable in raw athletic ability and game tactics.   That situation was OK relative to the talent of Pepperdine, but Oregon is not a good soccer program.   It will be a rebuilding year, but in this year the team may need tactics that are not built upon having superior physical abilities, ball skills and depth.

Hopefully the Oregon game was just a one off thing.   Potentially the wet fake turf was a big part of the challenge.

RE: W Soccer 1, Oregon 2 - oldalum - 02-27-2021

From our national championship team, we have lost 3 players who were essentially the three very best college players in the nation (Smith #1 NWSL pick, Macario would have been #1 this year, and Girma is the front-runner for #1 in the next draft) and one who was drafted #33 (Hiatt). We are without half (5) of our starting field players in the national championship game. Of the 4 subs we used in that game, we have only one back (Doms) so far (Greubel is on the roster but hasn't played -- anyone know what's going on with her?). So we are without 8 of the 14 players who played in that game. And 35% of the field minutes in the Oregon game were played by true freshmen (looking like freshmen--no immediate stars yet, unlike in past years). And we have had minimal practice time and just one pre-conference game. So I think the expectations have to be lower than in past seasons, especially early. That said, we still have 2 top-10 players in Haley and Pickett, an excellent GK, and solid experienced players in Westley, Doms, Kuhlmann and Briede. We only have two proven forwards (last year we had 4) and the offense is the hardest team thing to get clicking (especially on a slick Ducks field), but I expect it will improve greatly as the season progresses. I agree we do not seem as fast a team as we have been, but the ball skills seem ok, it's the decision making with passes that is understandably lagging. I think we will be an excellent team by the end of the season, an outside chance of being even a final four team if we can generate more offense, but probably not a national championship-caliber team. In the meantime, I look forward to watching the improvement of the team and the freshmen during the season.

WSoc lost to Oregon State today too 2-1. OSU scored the winner in the 83rd minute. Meyer faced 3 shots on goal, but 2 got through.

She said in an interview that she is definitely out for winter and spring. Preparing to be ready for next fall.

I thought the team looked noticeably better than when they last played. Probably in part because Utah is not good, but just better overall player and ball movement and control. The win is a nice reward for the players (and coaches).

Tougher test coming up; never thought Colorado would beat Cal but they did.
