Morikawa was planning to wear red. In spite of being a Cal grad. Shirt from his sponsor did not arrive on time.

Collin Morikawa was impressive. He thanked Tiger after winning. He said he lost his grandfather a month ago and it was important to tell people how you feel about them when you can and not to wait because you might miss your chance.

Not sure what color their shirts were today, but the most likely red to be associated with our men's golf team in today's first round of the Cabo Collegiate is the embarrassment on their faces at their performance. When your team's best score on the day is a 78, you are going to be in last place. 78, 79, 82, 85, 86. Oh my.

Doesn't matter what color you wear when you're DFL, but it appears to be a very difficult course. Six of the top 10 teams in the country are there, and yet only four players finished under par.

Glad to see them on top after Day 1, but it's a very weak field.

A win is a win and the Cardinal wrapped up the title today. Big confidence boost for the 3 frosh who played great. Rachel Heck was the medalist (first career college win in her first tournament), Sadie Englemann finished 10th and Rebecca Becht playing as an individual was tied for 5th. They have really raised the level of competition on the team. One of Stanford's Achilles' heels the past few years has been sometimes weak play at the bottom of the lineup. This year it seems that any of the 5 players (whomever they happen to be) in a given tournament could carry the team. It's going to be fun to watch them develop over the next few months.
Upcoming is a dual match vs. Washington on Friday; then 3 tournaments before Pac 12s late in April. Stanford will host an NCAA Regional in May.

A bit of redemption, as the team improved its score by 27 strokes in round 2, finishing in the middle of the pack for the day. But when the field has already lapped you after the first round, there's no chance for a good result. Cardinal moved up 2 spots, to 14 of 16 teams. Probably won't improve much from there, as it's a long way to the top 10.
In the category of "what a difference a day makes," Shimp went from 86 yesterday to 73 today and Thorbjornsen went from 85 to 71. There is only one golfer in the whole tournament who is under par, so the course is brutal.

It's a rebuilding year for men's golf. Doesn't help that your two most senior players are playing like crap so far. Neither Shimp nor Snyder played particularly well last year either after strong contributions in 2019.
If they can finish middle of the pack tomorrow that'd be good and would probably move them up a few spots. I don't expect better than middle-of-the-road finishes this year unless the field is weak.

If Morikawa keeps putting well with the new grip he can win a bunch of majors over the next 20 years.

When he won the PGA a HS buddy of mine who went to Cal texted me "How about that?" and I shot back "Congratulations. It's now 42-1."
I like his game but I can't root for him. Ever.
