WBB: Stanford 92 USC 53 P12 Tourney - 81alum - 03-03-2021

Preview:

USC got very hot shooting the ball against ASU and earned the right to face us with a 71-65 win.  They shot 65% from the floor--breaking some records--and used a very active zone to frustrate ASU.  Four of their players scored in double digits--perhaps Endya Rogers and Alissa Pili were expected, but grad student Jordan Sanders and freshman Jordyn Jenkins were not.  They were 7/14 from three point range and had a balanced offense all over the court.

They do not look like the same team we defeated in December or in January--with Pili getting back into form after a long injury and the maturation of  their freshmen.  USC lost its final 3 regular season games but look quite good today.  They will be a serious opponent.

I worry about their active zone--it will force us to make treys, and if for some reason we are cold from long range it will be a difficult game.  ASU turned the ball over a lot trying to get the ball inside and failing.

On the other end of the court, I can hardly believe they made a CTT defense look so terrible--hopefully Tara can have our team play better defense than ASU--but that is normally an ASU strength.

A possible weakness--USC seems very vulnerable to ASU pressure late in the game and gave back a chunk of lead.   USC also had 15 fouls and probably should have been called even more.

usc should always have more fouls called against them.

Not worried about the condoms (Polar Bears is the only team that concerns me).

We smoke them 79-42 to avenge the men's humiliating loss.

Folks may be interested in reviewing our last USC game thread.  This was the game after our two game losing streak.

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=21444

We seem to have a major rebounding advantage against USC, and last game we shot the three well.  But we turned the ball over way too much.

USC is shooting much, much better now than when we last played them.  If our defense cannot reduce that, then we will have to improve in every other way--most especially in keeping turnovers down and keeping rebounding up.  We should have advantages in the post, which will mean that USC will clog the paint and take its chances with the three.  Hannah Jump had a good game last time--we may need an even better game from her this time.

Brink was not such a focus last time--if we can find a way to feed it to her inside the zone then USC will fall.  But ASU turned the ball over repeatedly trying to feed the ball inside.  The USC zone is active and deflects many inside passes.  We may need to splash some threes to loosen the zone up enough for Brink to be able to receive passes.

In USC’s three previous games they lost by 24, 25 and 42 points. ASU lost to cal recently. I worry before every game but usc isn’t all that

I see this game as an opportunity for our team to showcase the powerful force that is the Stanford Cardinal women basketball team.   I would like to see them hitting on all cylinders, with low turnovers, lots of steals and blocks, and high scoring.  I'd like to see Cameron stay out of foul trouble while Brinking at least 5 shots.  I'd like to see Jones take care of the ball and pull a double double.  But, most of all, I'd like to see us get the win without any injuries or Covid problems.

ASU had 20 offensive rebounds and USC had 1.  We will win if we have a good inside game today.  We can win other ways too.  But rebounding is a weakness for USC.

Indeed, Bob.  But I am just fulfilling my self-appointed role as pessimist-in-chief.  Always best to begin with the worst case and then be elated when it turns out to be the best case!

But a team that shoots 65% against a CTT defense has to be respected.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - chimera - 03-04-2021

I don't ever put much stock in one game stats.  Sample size is too small.  If USC routinely had games like that I would worry more.  Plus ASU is very bad and very inconsistent this season.  They looked terrible when we played them a couple of weeks ago.  USC could give us trouble if we do not play well but so could almost any team in the conference.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - CompSci87 - 03-04-2021

I see Pili is playing. She had missed all of Stanford's first game against USC and much of the second with her lingering ankle injury. I didn't watch much of yesterday's game, so I didn't get a sense of how much impact she's having.

Hard to get many o-boards when you're not missing your shots...

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - martyup - 03-04-2021

I find it difficult to work in anticipation of this game.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - martyup - 03-04-2021

Nice start for the team.  16-1.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - PVTree - 03-04-2021

Strong start despite a few turnovers. Condoms finding that shooting a high percentage is not so easy vs. Stanford's defense.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - martyup - 03-04-2021

We've already have 4 turnovers.  If we can control those, we should cruise.

23-5 at the end of the 1st Q.  I'll take that.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - TheFarm07 - 03-04-2021

We are off to a great start, leading 23-5. After a slow start offensively due to some missed shots and a few turnovers, we cleaned things up as Haley already has 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Defensively, we are holding USC to 2/19 shooting.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - martyup - 03-04-2021

What a difference defense makes.  USC shot 65% in their last game.  After one quarter, they are shooting 11%.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - PVTree - 03-04-2021

23-5 after 1. Another quarter where we outscore the condoms by 10 points, and we can put it on cruise control for the second half. They won't be able to overcome a 25+ point deficit.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. USC 2pm Thursday P12 Tourney - 81alum - 03-04-2021

Jones is a genius.
