Pakola coming back? -

He has withdrawn from the transfer portal. If he is indeed coming back to the team, kudos to Josh and the coaching staff for working things out and getting Josh on track again to be a Stanford man and graduate. Great news for him and Stanford.

I mean he plays at a position of desperate need, so it was advantageous to both sides to work something out.

Imagine that it would be Kennely or Armitage behind Pakola. Or, Shaw could do that thing where one player is the back-up at two positions.

We don't run 3 DL sets most of the time; we're in nickel. This has been the case for like 5 years.

Could this be why the run defense has been so lousy?

Most teams play nickel most of the time against most offenses. When you have 3, 4, and sometimes even 5 wide receivers (or 4 receivers with a RB who acts as a fifth receiver) on the field at a time, it doesn't make much sense to have 3 defensive linemen.
Even we had a fair number of plays out of the 11 formation.

Not necessarily. Personally my thought is it's because our (healthy) ILBs have been just awful for the past 3 years in run fits/reactions (Bobby O was much better in pass coverage than shedding blocks), and this past year our OLBs forgot what the terms "edge" and "contain" were. Even if our DL could handle double teams - which Booker and DWP actually can - the next level guys weren't in the right spot, or got there too slow and got swallowed up.
Then again, pretty much every single aspect of the defense has been lousy. Not just 1 problem.

Not like the pass defense was rockstar the last couple seasons either. Almost zero ability to pressure the QB. Party in the backfield became party in our backfield.

Getting back to Joshua Pakola, I'm really pleased that he is staying at Stanford. It's good for the team, but I think it's even better for Joshua Pakola. I cannot imagine a program that would be more supportive of a player going through tough times. I trust that it will be the best place for him to grow and mature on the field and off.

OK, he’s out of the Stargate but has he said he’s going to play?

Echoing the sentiments above, I hope he will look back on this decision in 40 years' time as one of the better decisions in his life. Stanford's not just a football school.
