WBB: STAN 79 OSU 45 - 81alum - 03-04-2021
Preview:
We played OSU only once since, in the words of Tara, "they didn't answer their phones" when we offered to reschedule the missed COVID game. That one game was a win, on Feb 13, before their new superstar high schooler Talia Van Oelhoffen had rounded into college shape. Since our 83-58 win, OSU has won 5 straight including 2 wins over Oregon and a win over UCLA. That is a very impressive stretch. They are playing their best basketball of the season right now and are on a roll, and have every intention of winning the tourney and increasing their seed for the NCAAs. Van Oelhoffen scored 19 today to defeat Oregon, and Taylor Jones, Aleah Goodman, and Sasha Goforth have already shown they can score against us.
In our last game Oregon State was within striking distance of us for 3 quarters--it was tense. But we had a 23-6 fourth quarter to blow the game open. We seemed to wear them down. Not sure that will be possible again now that they have more health and more experience working for them.

We are also playing our best basketball of the season, and we are on a roll too. We have won 12 straight. Wilson can handle VonO. Lexie and Williams can handle Goodman. Brink can defend Jones and Haley can handle Goforth. We should be fine. :•}

81alum, I always appreciate your analysis and also taking the cautious side of things, it's a nice contrast to other viewpoints, but martyup is also correct, that we are playing very well too.
Rueck and co. will have to contend with us as well and find ways to defend us. I imagine OSU posters are fretting about our tournament record 15 made three pointers and our deep bench on their end.
Having said that, I agree that the Beavers are tough and I also don't see us replicating the fourth quarter blowout we had last time either. I think the key against Oregon State is seeing if we can get Taylor Jones in foul trouble; while they have a plethora of high quality guards and wings, which was reinforced by Von Oelhoffen's arrival, they are not as deep in their frontcourt, especially as a scoring threat, beyond Jones. They have 6'9" Mitrovic, but she is not as polished as Jones.
Luckily for us, we have good perimeter defenders with Williams, Wilson, the Hulls and even Jump and Jones to match up against them. If we can force Taylor Jones to the bench, and exploit mismatches with Brink or our Jones inside, we might have an advantage there. If the Beavers get hot from long range, it will be a long night, but they are also known for going into an occasional shooting funk, especially if their Jones is not out on the floor as a different look. But, as you pointed out, OSU is playing well and it will be unlikely their level will drop significantly, even against our defense. We'll have to score as well on our end, but I think we have the firepower to do so.
Anyway, I always look forward to your analysis 81alum and I hope you keep it up, but I thought I would provide my two cents as well.

Yes, OSU's weakness is depth in the post since Kennedy Brown went down. I don't think Prechtel was healthy when we last played them. Rotating Brink and Belibi and Prechtel against Taylor Jones to stay fresh and wear her down (and get her in foul trouble) sounds like a possible strategy.
The key is defense on both Goodman and Oelhoffen simultaneously. Perhaps Wilson on Oelhoffen and Lexie on Goodman? As I think about the matchup issues, one thing always reassures me:
Tara is a genius.

I agree, 81alum, that we should take every opponent seriously and never underestimate them. Use them playing well as a base case scenario.
And confirmed Prechtel did not play in the game last time out against the Beavers. I forgot Kennedy Brown was on their team.
They will lose Goodman and Mack to graduation, but the Beavers will be good as well next year. They also add Kampschroeder, still another tall guard at 6'0" to their arsenal next season. Rueck has a knack for recruiting sharp shooting, tall guards/wings.

Stanford playing in its second game vs OSU in third -- but as important, no one for Stanford had a lot of minutes today -- most was Prechtel at 22. So we should be much more rested just based on today's games, let along the additional Wednesday game for OSU.

I don't think Tara will let the team overlook the River Rodents. I think Stanford continues its high-level performance, and the starters rest most of the fourth quarter with another 20+ point lead after three quarters.

Yesterday, I made a comment in which I put "bench" for Stanford in quarters. That wasn't a typo. Looking at the game against USC yesterday -- in which the "bench" outscored the starters, as well as the opposing team, and watching the play, it's evident that nearly all of the 7 Stanford players who don't start could be starting for lots of teams in the country. In fact, of Stanford's 7 people who didn't start yesterday, 5 have started games at some point either this year or last. The only two who haven't, Jana and Agnes. This is a year in which we really don't seem to have much of an "end of the bench," and for the most part, play doesn't drop off all that much when the starters sit. Yes, the same 5 people have been starting all games for the past few weeks, but it's been a variety of people who have been first in "off the bench." Depends on which starter need to go out, for whatever reason. It will be interesting to see what happens today. When we played OSU before, one of our "bench" players was absent -- Prechtel -- and she's been doing really well recently. Will OSU be ready for her? Lots to think about for this upcoming game.

I would advocate for that lineup as well, just to see what that would look it, but have we seen it yet this season? I can't recall them both being on the floor together and if they have, not for significant amounts of time. Would Tara be reluctant to do so against OSU who have a lot of talented guards/wings who might be too quick to have both Brink and Prechtel on the floor together?

Oregon State does not guard the pick and pop well. Their ball screen defense philosophy is to let Jones sit in the lane and make the ball handler take a tough two. I think that is potentially why Tara used Jerome last time out - and it made her look brilliant on the offensive end.
However, with Prechtel back we can do that same attack and not give up defense/rebounding like Jerome did.

I also like the idea of playing Ashten and Cam at the same time, not just on the offensive side but because Brink can defend guards. I've been so impressed with how well she defends out on the perimeter. They think they have an advantage but she often blocks (or at least really contends) the step back or a shot off dribble penetration.
