RE: Men’s Water Polo league championship play - M T - 03-06-2021

Thanks for the heads up.  One conference isn't playing this year.  As I posted earlier, the NCAA indicated that if that conference didn't play, there would be one at-large team.  If #3 Stanford loses today to #2 UCLA (in the UCLA pool), Stanford won't be going.  If Stanford wins, that doesn't assure them of going to the tournament.

Thanks MT. Why wouldn’t the loser of the final game tomorrow get the at large? Confused

Two scenarios.
1.  #3 beats #2 in the semis;  #1 and #3 play in the finals, with #1 winning.  The NCAA decides to award the at-large position to #2 based on the season, not one game.
2.  #3 beats #2 in the semis;  #4 beats #1 in the semis;  #2 beats #3 in the finals.  The NCAA decides to award the at-large position to #1.

I believe both have happened before in MWP but I can't quote just when.

Weenies beat the Condoms in the first match of the day.

RE: MWP - STAN vs UCLA (TODAY AT 2PM) - Spiny_Norman - 03-06-2021

Stanford wins 11-8! They play Cal tomorrow for the MPSF championship and the automatic NCAA invitation.

RE: MWP - STAN 11 UCLA 8 - BobK - 03-06-2021

Just awesome. Fun to follow One more win coming up

RE: MWP - STAN 11 UCLA 8 - Blue Hawk (Mizzou) Card - 03-06-2021

Any idea when the championship game is tomorrow?

I couldn't find it on the MPSF site. But that's not a surprise, as my tech/internet skills are unimpressive.

Stanford now 1-2 this season vs. UCLA. I think the Cardinal must win tomorrow to get into the tournament. If they lose, the committee might give a lot of weight to the head-to-head results which favors the Bruins.

From the GoStanford.com page on this game.
"This season, the NCAA tournament includes three at-large teams, making the MPSF semifinalists the most likely candidates."

This page suggests six teams in the national tourney, but does not state how they will be selected: https://www.ncaa.com/live-updates/waterpolo-men/nc/2021-nc-mens-water-polo-championship-scores-schedule-and-updates

RE: MWP - STAN 11 UCLA 8 - BobK - 03-06-2021

Ah the old say: Just win Baby

RE: MWP - STAN 11 UCLA 8 - Treefence - 03-06-2021

If we end up beating Cal and winning the MPSF tourney, it'll then be in our advantage to not have any at large bids.  It would essentially give Stanford a cakewalk to a championship, which we might need to keep the streak alive.

Quote:The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released updated information for the Winter 2021 Men’s Water Polo Championship.

The postponed 2020 National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championship was to be a four-team, single-elimination tournament. Six conferences (Golden Coast Conference, Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference, Northeast Water Polo Conference, Western Water Polo Association, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) were granted qualification into the bracket or opening-round structure and zero teams were to be selected at large.
However,  the Golden Coast Conference, Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) and the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) have subsequently withdrawn their automatic qualification that they were granted into the postponed 2020 National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championship. As such, this will now provide for three teams to be selected at large into the postponed 2020 championship to join the champions of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) and Western Water Polo Association (WWPA).
The top two teams qualify directly into the national championship; the remaining four teams will compete for the last two championship berths via two opening-round games, with the winners earning the remaining berths in the championship bracket.

RE: MWP - STAN 11 UCLA 8 - Papa John - 03-07-2021

Stanford 6, Cal 4 with 2 minutes to go in the third.

RE: MWP - STAN 11 UCLA 8 - M T - 03-07-2021

Stanford WINS 9-8.

I didn't watch, but watched the stats.
Stanford had 11 power plays and scored on 5.
Cal only had 7 power plays, scoring on just 1; They also got 2 penalty shots, scoring on just 1.

Cal was up 3-0 just 5 minutes in the game. The first quarter ended at 4-1 Cal.
At the half, it was 4-3 Cal.
Stanford finally tied it up 2 minutes into the 2nd half.
One minute later, Stanford goes up 5-4.
One more minute later, Stanford stretches to 6-4.
A bit later, Cal takes a penalty shot but it is blocked.
On the next possession, Stanford stretches it to 7-4 but Cal closes it to 7-5 on their next possession.
Stanford scores yet again before the end of the third to make it 8-5.

Early in the 4th, Stanford pushed it to 9-5.
Cal scores on a powerplay just after that, 9-6.
Another score for Cal closes it to 9-7 with 5 and a half minutes to go.

But the defense holds. Cal scores making it 9-8 with 27 seconds to go.
Stanford holds the ball for the win.

I don't know, but I think this should give Stanford the #1 seed at the NCAA tourney.
