MBASEB: STAN 15 USF 13 Final -
Madera86 - 03-07-2021
No broadcast today, which is a shame, since Stanford is feasting on the USF pitching. We scored 7 runs in the first inning. 6 players in the lineup have hits already, including Brueser with 2 RBI.
OTOH, our pitching is starting to creak as well. 11-3 bottom of the 4th, Dons batting with one out and bases loaded.

LOL. USF scores 11 runs in the 4th. Is there no one left who can throw the ball? Did I jinx the team? Now 12-12 top of the 6th.

Hey, we're up 15-12 now. Bottom of the 8th.

15-13, bottom of the ninth. We have scored in every inning but this one. Martinez has had a stellar day, but he struck out swinging with the bases loaded. Despite 15 runs and 20 hits, we've left 17 runners on base. The NCAA record is 23 for a nine-inning game (Arizona vs. Chapman). I couldn't find the Stanford record.
Grech is in to close. Can we hold on? Go Card!
And Grech retires the side with a 1-2-3 inning! Phew! Stanford wins, 15-13.

Stanford won 15-13. I guess any win is good.
But Stanford blew an 11 run lead. Stanford's pitchers gave up only 7 hits, but walked 10 and hit 3. Not so good.

This is the wrong way to look at it. Having won the series already and with their senior leader, Tawa, out injured, young Stanford led 11-0 in the fourth and had to endure a sucker punch of a half inning, where the Dons scored 11to tie. Rather than crumble, the team twice surged into the lead and held on for the series sweep, a remarkable showing of grit and fortitude on the road!

A little hard to know how to digest that one.
The fourth inning was both weird and a disaster. Somehow Stanford gave up 11 runs on only 4 hits - without even committing an error. That seems just about impossible. Of course there were also 4 walks, 3 hit batters, and the four hits were a HR and three doubles.
Outside the fourth it was a dominating performance, though that gets dangerously close to saying something like "outside of losing they would have won". Stanford scored every inning but the ninth, and even there they loaded the bases. Stanford put an amazing 34 runners on base, but left half of those there. On the defense side, outside the fourth, Stanford gave up only 3 hits but 6 walks and committed no errors in the game.
Fourth game in a week is going to be tough on the pitching staff this year, though it's tough on most college staffs. Stanford only faces that a few more times this year: another four game series next weekend vs. UC Irvine, then during conference play only three weekday games - two are non-conference games vs. cal.
And there actually was a live stream of the game, it just wasn't linked on the Stanford home page. I found it going through the USF site. Better quality production that Saturday's.

I’m with baseball junkie. Love we fought back for the win. Also Worley with 8 Ks in 4 innings is encouraging
We are 7-1. That’s great
How is Tawa?

Don't know. He has played through stuff in the past, including a torn labrum his entire sophomore year. Not playing through whatever this is is concerning.
