Yeah, so the coaches don't want to accept what their eyes tell them.  They just hope we're not as good as we've been playing.

I'm actually happy we're No. 2.  That's exactly where I want us ranked until the end of the season.  No. 1 has added pressures that I don't think we need, especially during the tournament.  Let the press focus on UConn while we keep playing our game.  I also think the rankings don't have a brobdingnagian impact this year because there are no favorable regional locations and it is pretty tough to know who the committee is going to put in each region anyway.  It looks like the teams ranked 1-8 are all capable of winning the tournament so regardless of our ranking, we're going to have to earn it.  Heck, even 9-12 are very dangerous teams and 13-16 are really good so the mountain looks steep to me.  I'm with Tara, it's time to worry and hope the team is spending the break building on what we've done, getting up a lot of shots, and improving our responses to zone and press defenses.  Maybe throwing in some time on our own press and zone defense just to be ready if we need to throw a different look at some teams.

Yes on the press.  With the speed and hands of the Hulls, Wilson, and Williams, we should have a tough press to break.

Couldn't agree more.  At times Stanford has had trouble attacking a zone defense and getting by press defenses.  I think Haley Jones may be really important in the NCAAs.  When UCLA started to press full court, they had some success until Haley came back into the game and started to bring the ball up the court.  Suddenly the press defense tactic failed.  Also when Cameron is not in the game, Haley maybe our best rebounder.

Jones is a very good rebounder and has a strong mid-level jumper.  She has not developed into the dominant player I expected coming into this season, mainly because of her propensity to turn the ball over with poor decisions.  I'm not sure if it's poor vision or inattention.  In the UCLA game, she had one sequence when she attempted to pass the ball to Wilson on the wing while Cho was standing between the two.  Cho easily intercepted the pass and started up the court and Jones fouled her at mid-court.  Tara immediately signaled for one of the Hulls to replace Jones.

Earlier in the season, Tara would leave Jones in the game after a number of plays like this.  This hurt us in some games and may well have been a major contributor to our 2 losses.  I'm glad to see that Tara is quick to pull Jones when she exhibits this kind of play.   We have a talented enough bench to fill the void when Jones is out.

If Jones could learn to take better care of the ball, she could be as dominant as any player in the nation.

Except for that pesky little other stat:  1-9 [.111] from 3-pt range.  I'm not sure there's another player in the nation who could be considered close to "dominant" with a 3-pt shooting percentage like that.  Indeed, compared to Haley, Brink looks like Steph Curry  when it comes to shooting 3's...

While that would be great if Haley can expand her range to beyond the arc, I think reducing those silly turnovers is most important. She is obviously a very smart and talented player; her midrange jumper is so smooth and her ability to drive to the basket is great, too (especially on a fast break). It's just her very head-scratching mistakes that's holding her back from being a superstar All-American. She can make great decisions, too; she is second on the team in assists behind Kiana.

It's not just the low-percentage plays she's trying, like squeezing a ball in as a teammate heads to the basket for a potential easy layup, but puzzling turnovers when there's clearly an opposing player in the way and no clear advantage to getting the ball to her teammate immediately.

1/9 basically means she doesn't take 3-pt shots.  Only two players on the team have had fewer 3 point attempts: Fran Belibi and Agnes Emma-Nnopu.  I agree otherwise that dominance for a player like Jones would mean adding a decent three pointer to an arsenal that also includes a good mid-range jumper and excellent driving to the basket.

to give a basis for comparison, Jones is averaging 13 points and 7.7 rebounds.  As a sophomore, Kayla Pederson as a sophomore averaged 10.8 points and 7.8 rebounds.  A higher scoring Kayla Pederson is not a bad place to be!

Being #1 or #2 overall seed would matter if there are 3 elite teams and then a sharp drop off. If seedings  were to  hold, #2/#3 would have to play each other and then #1 to win the NC, while #1 would only have to play one of #2/#3; an easier path. (This used to happen all the time in MWP NCAAs as MPSF teams were way better than the other teams but only 3 of them made the tournament. However, this year 4 MPSF teams were selected.)
This year there are two elite WBB teams (us and UConn) followed by closely bunched teams that the NCAA committee could arrange any number of ways on the S-curve. So, I am less interested in whether we are #1 or #2 overall than which specific teams will be in our bracket for the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight.

I don't even know that there is a big gap between UConn/Stanford and other top 5 teams.  I think based on the totality of the season, UConn and Stanford stand out, and should be appropriately ranked 1/2, but I think there is a better than even chance that the final will not be Stanford vs. UConn, and given the number of good teams out there, I might take "the field" over Stanford or UConn to win the whole thing.  In a single elimination tournament where you have to win 6 games (at least three of which will likely be against very good teams), really anything can happen.

I think it's hard to say who really stands out this season when there have been very few non-conference top tier matchups to compare the teams between conferences. Among the few that have happened, UConn did beat South Carolina, but it was a close game and evenly matched. It wasn't like a few years ago, when the Huskies were destroying everyone else, including other top tier teams.

I mean, given our schedule, we have good as a claim as any team, but as Creme pointed out, Texas A&M and South Carolina also have six Top-25 NET rankings wins too.

To take an example, if you take the Pac-12 and SEC tournament semifinalists as a collective bunch, who would be better? Us, UCLA, Arizona and Oregon State or South Carolina, Texas A&M, Georgia and Tennessee. In my opinion, that's eight good teams there and it will be interesting to see how it turns out over the next few weeks.

agree lots of very capable teams on any day....also, we can have an off day -- AND while UConn has been very consistent, they have beaten one top 10 team once and on a day that team played REALLY below average. So who knows? I'll take the field bet (but also because that way I'm hedging my pro-Card emotions).

mostly agree, but imo at least 1/3 of her turnovers - maybe 1/2 - occur when the other 4 players stop moving or don't execute their cuts correctly. to my eyes, the 4 teammates often stop and watch to see what magic haley will unleash. imo haley passes quite well to cutters with only occasional errors. she doesn't direct the offense as forcefully as kiana and seems at a loss when she stands at the top of the key and no one uses screens or mis-direction to get open. if kiana doesn't come rescue the ball, haley forces it to a teammate who has been standing still, and it's easily intercepted.

agree that there aren't many, but...

if i can include past stanford players, jayne appel.

if i can include past warriors players, shaun livingston (#4 overall pick in the nba draft). like haley, shaun had an excellent mid-range jumper and nothing from downtown (career 3pt % of .176, career 2 pt % of .486, mostly from mid-range).
