Giants/Niners 2021 thread - lex24 - 03-16-2021

I guess this is now the thread for all things MLB. Although there is sufficient interest, I would think for a separate Giants 2021 thread. What do you say, moderators?

In any event, Alex Wood seeing a spine specialist for his back. Not good. But also not surprising. He’s been hurt most of the last few years. So as of today:
Cueto, Gausman, DeSclarfini, Sanchez and Webb. That’s assuming Sanchez is healthy. Nothing to worry about though. They simply need 3 strong from the starter then the parade begins. Along with the Sacto-Oracle express. (Or for month one - alternate camp express) About 18 deep, I suspect. Not 18 strong, mind you. I’m thinking: Alvarez, McGee, Rogers, Wisler, Garcia, Peralta, Tropeano, and Kazmir break north. With the shuttle guys being Baragar, Moranta (unless his velocity improves he’s gonna need time), Selman, Menez, and maybe Doval. Brebbia and Beede are on 60-day. I suppose Yamaguchi or Sherfy could join the mix. Options key of course. (Which is why Baragar and Selman start in Sacto) The bottom line - this is going to be a putrid pitching staff. (They are particularly weak in right handed relievers). Of course, Farhan may grab a couple other guys pre April 1. Can’t have enough below average older arms.....

Let’s hope for a LOT of runs. I mean who needs pitching, anyway.

10-4 win over the Dodgers. 14 Giants' strikeouts, coupled with three homers, including a grand slam by Chadwick Tromp. Yaz an HR and triple, Longoria an HR. Slater 1 for 3. Scott Kazimir, trying to come back after three years out of baseball gave up two runs on an HR, but struck out four in three innings.

So far, for sure. Gausman has been just ok, Cueto less than satisfactory, then there's Mr Bad Back, and Sanchez who is coming back after how many years? Kazmir? Really? I must be missing three really good pitchers:)

Spring training. It’s good to see what he’s doing. But let’s wait until at least June or to anoint him...

I think Webb will be better than advertised. I think Gausman will be excellent. I think Cueto will have issues as his velocity has declined rapidly. I think DeSclefani and Wood are doing well. On the other hand, I don't think Sanchez has enough left, I think Kazimir should have stayed retired.

BTW, all current starters are right handed, best relievers are all left handed.

Giants over the past two games gave up four runs total and scored 13. Giants are now 10-10.

Giants currently 2nd in MLB in stolen bases with 23, and first in errors with 22. They are 6th in OPS and 9th in runs scored, 7th in batting average, second in on base percentage.

On the other hand, 23rd in ERA, and 27th in WHIP but are 6th in HRs given up.

Could be a rough year.

I think ST records and stats are meaningless. But I agree, it may be a rough year. Pitching and defense are, to be generous, questionable.

Niners give away the future - Phogge - 03-26-2021

Trade two #1’s and a #3 plus this year’s 12th pick for the Dolphins #3.

Speculation is Lance or Fields. Obviously Kyle has fallen in love with one of them.

Lynch must be confident in someone or two someones (given #2 pick may get their target) as two future first rounds and current third round is a heavy price to pay for moving up 9 spots. He also must be confident that they are an elite team with end of first round picks the next two years. I like the confidence. I hope it doesn't look like hubris in hindsight.

This trade is undoubtedly a big risk. Sometimes you have to take a risk and go for it, but I just don't see this team as good enough in the near term to ensure they can take advantage of a "great" QB. The offense they run doesn't require that. It requires consistency and accuracy with the ability to throw deep when it is there. Not sure that is what you get in a 1st round draft pick who wants to be "the man". Draft picks, particularly QBs, often don't work out as expected.
