WRESTLING: GRIFFITH IS NATIONAL CHAMPION!!!! - martyup - 03-18-2021

In the first round of the NCAA Wrestling Championships, Woods got revenge on that Beaver that beat him in the Pac-12 final.
And Requir van der Merwe gets a first round win after holding out with a 1 point lead.  In the final seconds the UVA wrestler got a takedown to win the match, but on video review it was deemed after the clock went to zero.
Unfortunately, Abas got beat in the first round by a much lower seed.

I feel bad for these wrestlers who aren't seniors. This is their last meet wrestling for Stanford. They have a tough choice to either quit collegiate wrestling and graduate from Stanford or transfer and compete and graduate from another college. It is hard to believe that Stanford is treating people this way. Very sad.

Perhaps graduate and then use remaining eligibility as a grad transfer.   
When schools discontinue sports these end of program choices are the reality.
Stanford has not discontinued a lot of sports, but this is the norm.   It could be worse as some schools cut student aid in rather harsh ways.

This has been a tough way to end a program, but there are not a lot of great ways to end a college program.

I can't say that I follow wrestling, but this definitely has got me excited:

ST. LOUIS -- Alex Marinelli’s road to an elusive national championship has once again been upended by a guy from New Jersey.

Stanford’s Shane Griffith, a two-time state champion at Bergen Catholic, stunned Iowa’s top seed and national title favorite with a takedown in sudden victory to seal a 3-1 win in the 165-pound quarterfinal round Friday at the NCAA Championships.

Griffith looked overmatched the whole way, but he just kept defending.  brobdingnagian upset over the #1 seed.  Griffith makes All-American!
Marinelli of Iowa was the first #1 seed to lose.  Griffith has a shot at the title!

Stanford wrestlers are wearing singlets and headgear with no school logo as a protest to Stanford's decision to cancel the sport.
Griffith wins his semi-final match to make it to the Championship Final!!  We could have a National Champion wrestler!  What kind of irony?

Abas makes All-American!!  He fought his way through the consolation bracket and wrestles tomorrow for 7th or 8th.  That makes two All-American wrestlers on the team that was scorned.

Interestingly, Abas was the 8th seed and drew #25 Yahya Thomas from NW in his first match.  Thomas beat Abas and won his next match to become the lowest seed to make it to the quarter finals.  Abas then started his journey through the consolation bracket and won 4 consecutive matches, including beating the Iowa wrestler, before meeting Yahya again and losing to him again.  So Abas is 4-2 so far in the tourney and his two loses are to the same guy.

Abas wins his final match to place 7th in the Nation.  He went 5-2 at the NCAAs.  All-American.  Discarded by his Alma Mater.

HE WON IT!!  GRIFFITH WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!! At #8 he was the lowest seed in the Championship round.  Only the second Stanford wrestler to win a National Championship.
