Palming the ball - Phogge - 03-20-2021

Why not just let them carry it like team handball. One reason why I don’t watch much. I looked in on Santa Barbara and on one possession the opponent PG palmed every dribble from end line to top of the key. Humbug. BTW Stanford should snag the SB coach.

I agree it's annoying, but the zebras seem to call it when the player gains an advantage in getting by the defender by palming the ball, or when they start to make a pass and then change their mind and start dribbling again.

Agree, Pasternak would be great.

I'll claim dibs on being the first to make the Pasternack suggestion...... :-p

MBB: Pac-12 Tourney Stanford loses to lowly Weenies (thecardboard.org)

It's not going to happen this year since Haase just landed Ryan Agarwal, but Pasternack's Gauchos were less than an inch from beating a Creighton team that just stampeded by Ohio and is in the round of 16 right now.  That's the kind of direction we should be looking in -- a mid-major coach who didn't just have a great couple of weeks, but is running his conference, like Pasternack is starting to do.

Haase is not yet completely out of rope to work with, but he needs to start winning in March.  At Stanford, his record in March is now 4-14.

Absolutely agree. This is the criteria that will decide if we can ever become respectable. We need to play at least as well in March as we did in January. Hopefully we will actually improve as the year goes on, but if we are always on a downhill slope at the end, a change must be made.

That pretty much describes Jarod Haase at UAB just before Stanford hired him.

RE: Palming the ball - BostonCard - 03-25-2021

Haase at UAB:

2011/12 (prior to Haase): 15-16 (9-7 in conference)

2012/13: 16-17 (7-9 in conference)
2013/14: 18-13 (7-9)
2014/15: 20-16 (12-6), conference tournament championship, NCAA tournament second round
2015/16: 26-7 (16-2), conference championship, NIT

Joe Pasternack:
2016/17 (prior to Pasternack): 6-22 (4-12 in conference)
2017/18: 23-9 (11-5)
2018/19: 22-10 (10-6)
2019/20: 21-10 (10-6)
2020/21: 22-5 (13-3) first round NCAA tournament

Both turned around mid major teams, but Pasternack's was more dramatic, going from 6 wins to 23 wins in a year.

Here are the top five in terms of both points/game and minutes played/game for this year's UCSB men's BB team:
Jaquori McLaughlin: Transfer from Oregon State
Amadou Sow: High school recruit
Ajare Sanni: Transfer from University of the Pacific
Miles Norris: Transfer from City College of San Francisco, before that played for University of Oregon
Devearl Ramsey: Transfer from University of Nevada

Four transfers. Great for the Gauchos but I doubt it's a winning formula at Stanford.

And for reference, here are the top five scorers for Haase's 2015-16 team at UAB:
Robert Brown: Transfer from Virginia Tech
Chris Cokley: High school recruit
William Lee: High school recruit
Dirk Williams: High school recruit
Nick Norton: High school recruit

One transfer, albeit UAB's top scorer.

Joe Pasternack might be an improvement over Haase, but I don't think his method of building the Gauchos into the big dog in the Big West would work at Stanford. JP did work at Arizona prior to his UCSB employment, so at least he knows the conference. His brother-in-law is Roxy Bernstein, so like Haase he has a Cal connection.
