Shaw in the top 25 - magnus - 03-23-2021

The Athletic has two top 25 college coaches articles.

Shaw checks in at 14 in one and 23 in the other.

Quote:14. David Shaw, Stanford (2020 — No. 17): The Cardinal had been trending down the past few years, but they had a decent bounce-back going 4-2 in 2020 after a 4-9 record in 2019. Shaw, who is so well-regarded by his peers at the college and NFL levels, is 90-36 as a head coach and 62-24 at a place where the recruiting pool isn’t anywhere near as deep as the places where most of the coaches on this list work.

Quote:23. David Shaw, Stanford (2020 — No. 21): Stanford bounced back from its first losing record in 11 years by going 4-2, despite having to spend the final four weeks of its season living and practicing on the road due to county COVID-19 restrictions. Shaw’s program is now five years removed from a stretch of five seasons of double-digit wins in his first six years at the helm, but he still boasts an impressive 62-24 record in Pac-12 play over a 10-season tenure.

90 wins but will he get to 100 in 2021? 2022? 2023? Tough schedule. Not much in the QB room.

Tanner McKee is a great prospect but he won't be a superstar right out of the chute. Not much chance in us getting ten wins in 2021.

Anyway, the Shaw boo-birds will have a great time with this one.

The best QBs are great when they are RS frosh. If McKee isn't this "out of the chute" Stanford won't win much.

If not great, they are at least "real good". McKee has even more reason to be good because he spent two years on a mission, which makes him two years older than a "normal" red-shirt frosh. He should be more mature both mentally and physically. I think we have a reason to expect "more than good". However, as we all know from experience great high school QBs often don't live up to the hype. Mills did once he could get on the field. Hopefully McKee will as well.

Counterargument: the last time he started a competitive football game was three years ago.

Granted, but Mills was pretty much in the same situation when he replaced KJ in 2019. One could argue worse, as he had to rehab from injuries so much his "simulated game" practice was limited. The "game experience" does matter, because you can only simulate so much in practice. However, if the skill set is there it can cover a lot of sins. You may not always get the right read until you have more experience, but if you can execute and get the ball to the receiver on time and in stride it can make up for a lot. McKee has also had a year to use the "virtual reality" system, to study the playbook and to prepare as the backup. He shouldn't be "deer in the headlights".

I predict McKee will be very good, not great, but very good. The offense will be good enuf for 10 wins, but the defense....who knows?

Running game could be special.  McKee’s delivery concerns me.

Lex24, are you concerned he is too slow getting the ball out, or is it some other mechanical issue? I haven't watched him throw enough to really have an opinion. I do agree the running game could be special. I hope it is, as we need to keep the D on the bench as much as possible.

He’s got an elongated motion.  Plus he throws from a somewhat low arm angle.  Although at 6’6 that may not be a big issue.

RE: Shaw in the top 25 - Phogge - 03-23-2021

Randy Johnson did ok with a low arm angle.

My impression also is that he had an elongated motion, but my sample size is small. He is a big guy with long arms. That can make the throwing motion look long when it really isn't. It can also make the throwing motion be long and a bit slow. We shall see. Last year we had pretty good pass protection most of the time. If that continues, being a bit slow may matter less. No hurried throws.

Kruk is busy trying to raise bail money for Lenny Dykstra.

Just like Hogan. If he wins as much as Hogan I won't care what his motion is.

Not a chance. Problem is the supporting cast. Hogan was bolstered with bona-fide studs on both sides of the ball. Today? The depth of a kiddie pool.
