Bernie, Bernie, he's our man...
pathetic is apt descriptor. and if possible, the Griffith piece puts him in better light than the Varsity Blues documentary.

Quote:Stanford athletics did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Griffith’s national title. On Saturday the athletic department Twitter account @GoStanford tweeted, “Shane Griffith is a national champion. The redshirt sophomore completed his run at the NCAA championships atop the podium, Saturday, at the Enterprise Center.” The dry message was notably missing the exclamation points and emojis that accompany almost every other post.

"There's nothing Stanford hates more," Griffith said, "than bad publicity."
Good insight.

Anybody still think Muir is doing a good job???? This is beyond shameful.

The irony is that the bad publicity results in it being more likely that we are stuck with him. Muir has full backing of MTL and provost. He isn't getting fired. There was a decent chance that he would get Duke job or Pac-12 job. That possibility has been lowered with his recent publicity.

Muir will have the full backing of MTL and Drell, until he doesn't. While I don't think they will cut him loose at this time, that doesn't mean they won't cut him loose. And the longer this drags on, and the worse the publicity associated with it, the greater the odds that Muir is offered as the sacrificial lamb.

Muir's record at Stanford is, at best, underwhelming. Especially in light of his two immediate predecessors' accomplishments. The closer we look at him, the less we see.

Wow, that is quite an indictment of Muir. Run him out on a rail!

I've never been in favor of paying student-athletes, but I have to wonder if that 84% increase in AD employee compensation and benefits could have gone to our players. Maybe they will be wondering the same thing.

I think those stats need some context. How much of the increase in AD employee compensation is increased headcount and how much is increased salary to existing FTEs? How much of those AD employee are ancillary staff to the football team (people like Mike Eubanks, who is a recruiting coordinator for the football team, but whose title is associate athletic director) versus paper pushers within the athletic department staff? How many are a result of increased compliance burdens? How many FTE's were required to do the internal audit for Varsity Blues? Most importantly, how does this compare to peer institutions? Is this an NCAA-wide phenomenon or is this a Stanford specific one?

Get rid of the steak eaters at DAPER and keep the Mike Eubanks who bring actual value to the department.

We had a university president at State who started cancelling alumni efforts to support our meagerly funded varsity teams ( Note: I served on our Athletic Board for 20 years). Some of the events were small money raisers but one in particular generated goodwill from disenchanted ex-athletes who stopped all financial support because of the closure of our football program. The ill will lasted for two decades and we were just beginning to thaw relations when he fired the Assistant AD who oversaw those efforts and cancelled our event. I started a small letter writing campaign asking guys to withdraw support. Probably didn't help but he retired a year later. We were just getting back on our feet when the state system cancelled all sports through Spring term 21. I expect some sports will never come back and we didn't have that many left anyway.
I suppose you all could notify the president (MLT?) that your checkbook is closed unless something changes. Of course if Muir is in bed with Arriaga then you guys are hosed.

Or could have prevented the cutting of at least some of the 11 teams. Given the declining projected revenues over the last 3-4 years as the P12N imploded, this is inexcusably bad financial mismanagement.

The misrepresentation of “savings” and the graph showing the 11 sports being among the cheapest to operate, wow. Those are FACTS and I guarantee you the dude would not last 2 years in the real world of the for-profit private sector, let alone 8+ years at Stanford.
Jeez Louise, I had a bad feeling about him, but who would have thought it would be this f*ed up?
RE: Really bad publicity -

The administration above Muir wants a smaller proportion of the student body to be scholarship athletes, and less "privileged" ones at that. If you start with that premise, everything makes a lot more sense. It explains why no amount of fundraising is going to resurrect those sports. It explains why the operating cost savings are de minimis. With the exception of wrestling, it also largely explains why the sports that were cut were chosen.
If you really buy the explanation that Muir has been offering, I have a bridge somewhere to sell...
