Portland Men's BB - triangle2 - 03-29-2021

So, here's yet another story about the seedy side of college BB. Terry Porter was recently fired at Portland after several years of seriously not winning. Portland then hired Shantay Legans from Eastern Washington. Apparently, Legans' first act as the new coach was to cut all the players from the team. Seriously. He cut all of them. How is it that people haven't figured out how awful the system is for players? More fuel for going directly to Europe or the D league.

With all of the kids currently in the transfer portal, Legans apparently is making the cynical calculation that he can bring in a rental team.

Seems to me that this is another example of reasons to abolish the NCAA. I can't imagine how I would feel as a parent if a college did this to my kid.

I don't really feel hardcore about this, but if this is a situation where the entire team has checked out, with comparatively little skills and they're not committed, and they're not excited about the program...then I understand.  It's the new coach's livelihood.  Doesn't he have to have the freedom to run it as he sees fit?

I took the lead BD role at one of the world's largest specialty law firms, a firm that had low rates, low staff morale and low staff quality. I should have fired the vast majority of them, as did the brand-new CTO.  She started the same day I did, did a quick skills analysis and determined that she needed to fire 90% of her team -- which she did.  And she lived a very happy life.  And I was miserable, trying to raise the skill set of 40 undertrained BD pros.  Not as bad as my Detroit experience where leadership invited me to get rid of 3/4 of my team.  I should have listened.  I hired giants around them -- they took to calling themselves "The B Team."  More like the D- Team.  Ugh.

If some parking cop left 50 tickets on my car, I wouldn't call in the US DoJ or blame the ex or current US President.

Assuming that cutting the team wasn't appropriate  (for instance, there may have been widespread violation of NCAA rules and/or illegal actions and/or violations of school policies), this is a problem of that coach or the school.

My understanding is that the coach wants to bring in his own players.

I think the problem here is being a college athlete who has to sign a LOI binding himself/herself to the school but isn’t getting a guarantee that the scholarship will be honored for more than a year. That’s a problem that the NCAA could have and frankly should have solved a long time ago.

The difference is that your staff were at will employees and likely would have gotten a severance package had you let them go.  College basketball players were unpayed, and while hopefully they will still get their degree, a lot depends on whether their scholarship continues to be honored.

Over the past three seasons, the Pilots are 1-42 in WCC play. I would say that a total overhaul of the program is probably in order. But I would have hoped that the new coach would at least evaluate current players before cutting them from the team. Jim Harbaugh inherited a disaster, but he found some good players on the roster who became the foundation of the turnaround.
