Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - ColoradoTree - 04-02-2021

The biggest home match of the year is happening now vs. #6 Pepperdine, who has a claim to being the best team in the country, losing only to UNC and to UCLA, the latter of which the Waves have already avenged.

At best, this is an absolute scrap on every court. How good is this Stanford team? We get a very big data point shortly.

How to watch: http://streamingtennis.com/Cardinal/?DB_OEM_ID=30600

Doubles could be absolutely critical, so I’m tuning into that now.

After this, Stanford travels to Eugene for a matchup with Oregon on Sunday at 11am.

1. Gordon/Madurawe trail 2-3 (down a break)
2. Arbuthnott/Blake lead 3-2 (on serve)
3. Choy/Shin lead 3-2 (up a break)

In singles, Ashley Lahey was the preseason #1 but has been playing #2 behind Jessica Failla, who played #1 at USC before transferring to Pepperdine what feels like ten years ago. Either way, it’ll be a tough match for Gordon and we should chalk up a loss at #2 for Arbuthnott. As per usual, our easiest path is doubles plus 3, 4, and 6, or those three courts and a win at 1 or 5.

1. Gordon/Madurawe trail 2-5
2. Arbuthnott/Blake lead 5-2
3. Choy/Shin lead 5-3

1. Gordon/Madurawe lose 2-6
2. Arbuthnott/Blake win 6-2
3. Choy/Shin lead 5-4 (up a break)

Choy/Shin have the doubles point on their racquets right now.

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - ColoradoTree - 04-02-2021

15-0, then Pepperdine got it to 15-40, and now we got it back to 40-40 for deciding point....

Got it! Stanford 1, Pepperdine 0 heading into singles!

Stanford 1, Pepperdine 0

1. Gordon vs. Jessica Failla
2. Arbuthnott vs. Ashley Lahey
3. Blake vs. Taisiya Pachkaleva
4. Geller vs. Shiori Fukuda (a transfer who used to play high in the lineup at Ohio State)
5. Choy vs. Lisa Zaar
6. Higuchi vs. Nikki Redelijk

Lot of great players on Pepperdine’s bench. Not many teams can match our depth. Pepperdine can.

Up a break in 4 of the 6 first sets.

Arbuthnott is down and can't tell if Geller is on serve or up a break...i think up a break.

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - ColoradoTree - 04-02-2021

Stanford 1, Pepperdine 0

1. Gordon leads 4-2
2. Arbuthnott trails 2-5
3. Blake tied 4-4
4. Geller tied 4-4
5. Choy leads 4-3
6. Higuchi leads 5-2

Blake and Geller had early leads that have been erased, but we’re holding our own.

Gordon, Choy, and Higuchi all clinch their first sets. Geller and Blake joined Arbuthnott in dropping the first. We’ll likely need a fight back somewhere as I’m not sold on Gordon holding off Pepperdine.

I’m pleased that Higuchi is getting a chance to hold her spot down and continue to play. Always love to see her out there.

I could absolutely see her continuing to play as a straightforward question of trust. She’s so reliable. Maybe you have a couple more talented players that could be playing 6 right now, but do you trust any of them more than Emma?

2-1 Stanford with 3 other matches trending to make it 3-3.

Comes down to:
Choy vs Zaar: 6-4 2-5

(unless one of the other matches can turn)

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - Treefence - 04-02-2021

Did Geller retire?  I'm just seeing people standing on court 4 watching other matches.

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - ColoradoTree - 04-02-2021

2-2 after Higuchi wins but both Arbuthnott and Blake fall short.

Gordon is a point away from a win, while Geller looks to have lost as well.

It’ll all come down to a third set in Choy’s match.

Choy is up a break 2-0 in the 3rd.

She and her opponent have really long rallies.

Edit...ugh, spoke too soon.  2-1 now.

She was up 40 love, but then lost 4 straight to lose that game.  Next game she was at 15-15 and smacked a gimme right into the net, and proceeded to lose that as well.   2-2 now with the match on the line.

Sadly Choy is in a horrible tail spin.  She was up 2-0 and 40-0 in the third set, but has now lost 4 straight.  Crumbling under the pressure, but hopefully she find her way.

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - magnus - 04-02-2021

Looks like she is getting treatment on her legs (massage-ish).

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - Treefence - 04-02-2021

Choy breaks the streak, now down 3-4, hopefully it's the start of a rally!

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - magnus - 04-02-2021

Tuned back in, and saw her on the ground.  And now limping.  uh oh.   Gutting it out though. (is it worth it?  potential further injury?)

Edit: or is it just a bad muscle cramp?

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - Treefence - 04-02-2021

They split the next two, Choy down 4-5, obviously needs this one to stay alive.

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - Jamesy - 04-02-2021

Tied 5-5 in the 3rd set!

5-5!

She's moving well now. (guess it was just a cramp)

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - ColoradoTree - 04-02-2021

This match has absolutely lived up to the hype. Third-set tiebreaker on Court 5 will decide it!

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - BostonCard - 04-02-2021

6-6.  We are going to a tiebreaker.

RE: Women’s Tennis: Pepperdine and Oregon - Jamesy - 04-02-2021

Something wrong with her shoulder? Choy's barely serving over the net.

Up 3-0 in the tiebreak!
