Tara - Phogge - 04-04-2021

Joe D goes out in style with another WS title in 1951... Elway after winning the SB... Otto Graham after another NFL Championship in ‘55... The Thumper hitting a dinger in his last at bat.

Nobody here will agree but what a way to go out if she decides to.

RE: Tara - Jamesy - 04-04-2021

More locally and recently, John Dunning.

RE: Tara - Snorlax94 - 04-04-2021

Crazy talk!

Tara is so young and is at the top of her game. She lives in one of the best (though very expensive) counties to live in with one of the nation’s longest life expectancies, and she coaches at the greatest and most beautiful university in the world.

She just went through a brutal Covid season on the road, but she lives in probably the most educated region with some of the lowest vaccine hesitancy rates (85-90%+ in the Bay Area plan to get the vaccine). So Stanford should be one of the safest places anywhere next season.

Plus she has an incredible line-up of recruits coming in for years to come!

RE: Tara - old spanish trail - 04-04-2021

Who are next year's guards? Jenna Brown, Jana Van G, Hannah and the Hulls?

RE: Tara - fullmetal - 04-05-2021

Add Haley Jones as a point forward when you want to go with a big lineup.  I can't imagine how good she'll be when she reaches the full extent of her collegiate powers :)

RE: Tara - Phogge - 04-05-2021

I knew it. So classy to go out a champ. Watching Willie Mays with the Mets was sickening. Spahn with the Giants. Walsh in 1994.

Wilson is actually a really good ball handler.  I think she could play point.

RE: Tara - Bruce Wang - 04-05-2021

Muir should hand the keys to the men's program to her.

Hold up—we don't know she's retiring yet! In fact there is no evidence of that at all currently. Everyone here is just speculating.

Listen to her press conference, and Tara was asked whether this win brings her career full circle.  Tara demured and basically said that winning championships is not what drives her to coaching.

RE: Tara - magnus - 04-05-2021

In one of the post tourney articles/interviews, she was asked if she had thought about retiring.

She answered that she had not during the season but that the season was now over and she could not see herself going through another covid season (and she hoped everyone was wearing their masks)

Edit: found this rivals interview that matches what i read last night on a different site that i can't recall.

Quote:Q. The real question is, some people would say this would be a time that perhaps you consider retirement, go out on top. I don't get that's the sense you have. Has it even crossed your mind, What more can I do? I just won another national championship. Maybe this would be a time to say, I've had a great career, I've done a lot, maybe it's time to ride into the sunset. Has that crossed your mind at all?

TARA VANDERVEER: Not during the game, but maybe I'll think about it later. Right now I am very excited about what we accomplished, and I'm really excited about the team that we have in that locker room and the young people that are committed to Stanford.

I'm happy. I'm enjoying it. I don't know if I can go through another COVID year, so I hope everybody is wearing their mask. Let's get better so we can get back to normal.

RE: Tara - oldalum - 04-05-2021

I'm pretty disappointed in her response. I wanted her to say: "Hell no! I've got great young players coming in next year, and we're just getting started!"

RE: Tara - Jskass - 04-05-2021

maybe we're just expecting too much from her in her response. I remember after completing my first marathon in 1984 thinking I'd NEVER run another. But did, many times. She just achieved a goal and went through the gauntlet of a season marred by CoVid. By June (MAY?) she'll be itching...

RE: Tara - M T - 04-05-2021

I brought up her possible retirement a couple of weeks ago.  I've got a handful of years on her, so I'm a little further into the "What do I want to do in my remaining years?" train of thought.

Her family mostly is her athletes.  The time with thrm would tend to keep her coaching.
But she has her mother, to whom she seems close.  She may want to be there for her mother.  Or, like too many of us, knows being constantly close would be stressful.

Tara leaving now would be good for Kate.  That may be the deciding factor.  Kate would start on the crest of a wave that she helped catch.  I doubt there is very much Kate needs to learn from Tara at this point.

What would Tara do if she retired?  I doubt she'd go into broadcasting.  I strongly doubt she'd stay at home with her dogs and play piano.  More likely, she'd be some sort of emissary for the game.  Perhaps tutoring coaches around the country, or consulting for teams.   I think she could easily do that for the rest of the years she might be able to work.

Jody Conradt didn't go out on top in 2007.  She's on NCAA committees to this day.  A few years ago, I was at a UTexas fan club meeting with the players, and she was visiting

As much as Tara wants to go on teaching, I bet she doesn't want to slide down a slippery slope.  I can hear the questioning of whether it is worth it in regards to how hard COVID was.  Yes, virtually everyone will be vaccinated by next season, but the effectiveness against the variants is still not demonstrated.

I'd say there is at least 60% chance that she'll retire.

RE: Tara - BobK - 04-05-2021

There are many travel possibility for them. And others close to Tara may decide it’s time.

RE: Tara - Spiny_Norman - 04-05-2021

Tara also commented on how much she disliked the time away from the team and the basketball court early in the pandemic lockdown. She said something to the effect of "If this is what retirement is like, I don't think I will like it very much."

RE: Tara - 82 Card - 04-05-2021

When asked about problems with the teams play, Tara said something like we'll have to study the film in the next practice. She clearly didn't mean tomorrow. I took it to mean she has teaching to do for the next campaign.

triangle2 - triangle2 - 04-05-2021

In an announcement with relevance to our coaching staff, UW just announced that they have hired Tina Langley from Rice as their new head coach. Big step up from Conference USA to the PAC-12 and as far as I can tell, she has no connection to west coast hoops.

RE: Tara - BobK - 04-05-2021

Langley had a Soph player from Roseville so recruited out here some.

I would be shocked if Tara retired now.  I know John Dunning did it with Stanford Women's Volleyball but I think Dunning and Tara have very different personalities.  Tara is so competitive.  And despite winning, she knows we didn't play up to our potential.  I think for sure she stays with the 2019 Jones, Belibi, Prechtel, Jump class all four years.  And maybe all the way through the 2022 Betts + ??? time on the Farm.
