Stanford golf - Spiny_Norman - 04-11-2021
This week, both the Stanford men and women golfers play their final tournament before Pac 12s.
The women play an underwhelming field in Fresno. They are currently ranked 31st by Golfweek, primarily because of the weak field of their tournaments. However the team does not have to worry about being invited to NCAA Regionals. Stanford will be hosting.
The men, currently ranked 52nd by Golfweek, will be playing in the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo. This is a premier college event that will be televised Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on The Golf Channel. On Monday and Tuesday, coverage runs from 4-7 p.m. PT with a three-hour replay beginning at 9 p.m. PT. On Wednesday, coverage is from 1-4 p.m. PT with a three-hour replay beginning at 8:30 p.m. PT.

Ranking the women's team that low is a serious joke I hope they use it as motivation.
Four current players were invited to the Augusta National Women's Amateur - I believe more than any other school. One of them didn't play - Aline Krauter - because she qualified for the LPGA ANA Inspiration, one of its majors. She was the only amateur to play.
They not only host NCAA Regionals but they also host Pac-12s starting a week from Friday. I expect them to win both and serve notice.
The men's team is probably more fairly ranked. They are a young team in the middle of rebuilding. The three players on the roster who played in the NCAAs in 2019 have had very disappointing seasons. I doubt any of them will be on the 5-man roster the rest of this season. But the two freshman - Vilips and Thorbjornsen - along with sophomore Barclay Brown who won their tournament last week are all for real.

Win, what are your thoughts about Vilips and Thorbjornsen so far? Neither has a top 10 in any tournament.
The women's low ranking is mainly a function of weak fields. In their only event with a national field, the ASU tournament, Stanford was 5th. The potential is there, but they have not delivered on it yet. We really won't know how good they are until P12s and then regionals.

Maybe no top 10s but still some good results
Thorbjornsen - T21, T74, T14
Vilips - T12, T74, T46, T14
Remember, they're freshmen. The jump from junior golf to college golf is pretty big in the men's game - bigger than in the women's game. And college life this year, especially in Santa Clara County, is a nightmare for them to adjust to.

3. Wake Forest: 12, 22, 23, 93, 173
Stanford: 24, 25, 36, 114, 231. Plus 251, 310, and 376.

Mine are the women's rankings, not the men's
Another measure of this women's team is; Liu and Wang, who played four and five in 2018-19, are now playing seven and eight,
having been leapfrogged by frosh Sadie Engleman and Rebecca Becht and sophomore Brooke Seay.
Another hint: number of times named a Rolex All American:
Heck, 5 (two-time US junior of the year and last year's US Amateur medalist)
Englemann, 4
Ye, 3
Seay, 3
And Krauter, a second-team college All American, had an AA-worthy junior career but, as a German, was not eligible for Rolex recognition.

So far today, Stanford's women have played a total of 118 holes, the equivalent of 6 rounds and ten holes.
One double bogey.

I think you mean one double bogey.
I agree this team should be ranked as one of the top three in country, and along with Men's Gymnastics is our best chance at another natty this academic year. Amazing depth consisting of very accomplished players.

Men's team played well today at Pasatiempo - 4th place against a very good field with 2 in the top 20
Women's team showing their depth and leading in Fresno after playing 36 today - 1st place with 4 of the top 10. When Krauter finishes last of the rostered players, you know you've got a TON of talent.

(School record is Stackhouse's 61 on her/our home course, Stanford GC.)
Also encouraging to see how nicely Sadie Englemann (T 13) is adapting to the college game.
These ladies women are as good a bet to win the national championship as anyone, especially given the vagaries of five twosome match play golf.

Yes, they lapped the field, in what in essence was the California colleges championship, minus the other CA Pac 12 schools. On to the Pac 12 tournament. I have very high expectations for this team. Their mediocre ranking is a joke, but it doesn't really matter since they have a guaranteed spot in the NCAA regionals due to being one of the hosts.
I don't recall anybody else shooting a 63 in the last 5 years - and that span includes 3 who are now pros. In her first four tournaments, Rachel Heck has two firsts, a second and an 11th. That's a strong start to a college golf career!

Heck also finished one shot out of the playoff at the Augusta National Women's Amateur, missing a 10-footer on 18.
The men are doing very well so far today. Now in second place but still on the course and Pasatiempo is playing TOUGH

At this point I believe the focus should simply be on making the match play rounds. It is a somewhat different game at that point and I think one that favors both the women's and men's teams.
