MGYM NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday - akiddoc - 04-12-2021

I believe the meet is on BTN+ Friday and BTN Saturday.

Stanford has been really inconsistent. Lack of summer training (and for some lack of fall training) is the likely culprit. My info is that the Stanford and Cal team members had a lot more difficulty getting access to practice facilities than the teams in the midwest, which basically trained in their home facilities without restrictions.

This is likely to be very close among Stanford, Michigan and Oklahoma.

Gymnastics isn't a contact sport, so I don't think it was impacted by the orders regarding contact sports.  Is the lack of training due to the fact that Stanford was not open?  But aren't all NCAA athletes limited in what they can do with their school teams except during their season?   Athletes  train mostly year around, but it is not with their schools in the summer.

Gymnastics training is year round. In a normal year the Stanford gym is open all summer and available to anyone on the team who is in town. The assistant coaches seem to be able to supervise in the summer - I guess the NCAA considers them to be "strength coaches." On most NCAA teams the assistant coaches do all the real coaching anyway. At most schools there is a "club" team and team members are expected to be there all summer to train. Official practices begin at the start of first quarter (or first semester at other schools). The gym was not open at all in the summer last year. The team could not get into the gym until late first quarter. Remember, gyms were closed and SCC did not let Stanford open up for training for many sports when fall quarter began. In fact, state wide, no gym was supposed to be open. The women's gymnastics team was training outdoors for quite a while (in the football stadium concourse I believe). Most of the men were training on their own in remote locations. I know Riley Loos had full access to a gym near home - per the inside info I have. (My son had access as well - not that he was supposed to. He had a key to a facility here in the Bay Area. He decided to stay home and not compete this year. His school was not open for in person classes this year so he didn't want to sit around in Chicago without access to a gym half the year.) Some others on the team had minimal or no access until winter quarter. Some guys with a lot of money set up elaborate home gyms in their family garages. I saw some crazy photos.

RE: MGYM NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday - Farm93 - 04-13-2021

This is exactly why every Stanford coach should get a pass this year.   There were places in the country where sports training continued very close to normal and other places where almost everything was halted. Based on all I have heard about the State of Oklahoma's COVID-19 mitigation strategies I can only imagine that the University of Oklahoma team did not have nearly the types of disruptions that the gymnasts at Stanford or even Michigan experienced.

Anyone know the story with Colt Walker? He’s our top recruit, but didn’t compete in the MPSF championship.

He did compete at MPSF's. Pbars. Didn't do very well. 13.30.

Interesting, I missed that, wonder if he's nursing an injury or what's going on.  He competed in all events vs Cal, and had a decent AA score.  Other than that, he's only competed in 5 total individual events.  It could just be competition based, and he just hasn't been a high enough performer, but it's hard to tell because we don't typically get a lot of insight with men's gymnastics.

You can see the live scoring here:

So far, we've done vaults.  Walker is not listed as scoring.

I'm only watching scores, not the actual meet. The team did much better than usual on floor. Malone did not do floor. In other years that would be bad. This year he has not done well on floor so it's good. Briones' 14.73 on floor is big. He has been inconsistent this year. Malone's Hbar score very low. I assume he either fell off or dumbed it down for the prelims. Stanford will easily make it into tomorrow's finals. Today's scores are wiped out prior to the championship round. Top three teams from each of the two preliminary sessions go to the finals tomorrow.

Here is the other place to follow the meet:

This is the last meet ever for Iowa and Minnesota. They are fighting it out for 3rd in the evening session. Top 3 to the finals tomorrow. 1 point of separation with 4 gymnasts left to go.

Michigan is going to win over Stanford. I think Michigan will win tomorrow. They held their top gymnast out of Hbar to rest him. We'll see if they do the same now on floor.

RE: MGYM NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday - akiddoc - 04-16-2021

Penn State making a brobdingnagian run for third on vault. They could possibly beat out Minnesota and Iowa.

You sure we'll lose?  It seems like it's going to be a really close finish.

RE: MGYM NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday - akiddoc - 04-16-2021

Stanford may pull out the afternoon session but it doesn't really count. UM held out their megastar Cameron Bock on the last 2 events to rest him for tomorrow.

RE: MGYM NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday - Treefence - 04-16-2021

Looks like our last two guys have a chance to win it if they combine for 25.433 or higher.  That seems doable, assuming I'm not doing my math wrong.

I guess the question is how much does that matter for two events.  I'd guess maybe 4 points would be a big spread between your best guy and your next guy on two events, I'd guess we win by about 2 points, so I wouldn't exactly call that hopeless.

Colt Walker 13.70 on rings for those keeping track of the freshman.

Minnesota pulls off 3rd place. Two brobdingnagian horizontal bar routines with 2 Penn State chokes on vault.

Stanford pulls out the prelim win. with a good 413.855. Will need a 416 tomorrow to beat Michigan. Bock will give them another 4 points on those 2 events.

RE: MGYM NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday - Treefence - 04-16-2021

Colt Walker makes an appearance on the rings he did parallel bars at MPSF championships, so it seems he's just a rotational guy at this point.

Very few freshmen do multiple events. Briones and Malone are freaks. I did expect Walker to do floor this year though.

It's the difference between Bock and their worst guy that matters. You won't see those two guys tomorrow.

Yeah that seems about right.  The good news is that Gunther's 11.533 on the pommel is low hanging fruit to improve.  On the other hand, we had only one other score below 13, so there's no room for a choked routine. I'd guess it'll be a three horse race with Oklahoma, Stanford and Michigan.

Yeah by "next guy" I meant next guy off the bench, not 2nd best.

Well, if you want to run the numbers ...
If you replace UM's worst guy on floor and vault (Miller on floor and Guy on vault) with Bock's best score of the year on each event, that gives UM another 2.874 points - or enough to edge Stanford's score today by 0.474.
By itself, that seems competitive.

Of course there's a lot of other guys involved, and I don't know how close they all pushed to their max today.

It's not vault that's the issue. It's Hbar. Bock has put up high 14's many times in his career. He may or may not do vault. Bock is prone to falling on vault. Wouldn't be surprised to see him on all 6 events though. On a good day he could add 6 points.

My son competed against Bock many times as a high school gymnast. I know a lot about his strengths and weaknesses.
