Oops. After doing a lot of tedious work to split the 2021 and 2022 posts out into a separate thread each, I accidentally deleted the 2022 thread due to misunderstanding a rather dangerous MyBB feature. Our last backup seems to have been in late 2022, so the best I'll be able to do is get back many but not all of the posts. Even that will take a while. :-(

I believe the Under Armour 2023 game is being televised on ESPNU at 1:00 pm Pacific. Julia Blyashov and Jordyn Harvey are on the roster. Blyashov is battling an ankle sprain so I don't know if she will play. I think this is televised live but I'm not sure because there isn't any publicity about it.

Blyashov and Harvey both were starters in the match on opposing teams. With 13 players on each team and everyone getting fairly equal playing time, it was difficult for anyone to get into a good rhythm.
I thought Blyashov played well when in the back row. In watching the Under Armour matches through the years I've learned how a player does here has no predictive value on how she will do in college.

Ipar's professional team coach is not happy with the way his team is playing during a match. Number 10 who most of his anger is directed toward, is arguably the best OH in the world. Ipar is number 16 standing directly behind number 10. He speaks in English during the time out because there are players from countries other than Turkey on the team. Playing for Hambly will be a walk in the park compared to playing for this coach.

Today Julia Blyashov was named Gatorade California Player of the Year. Last year Rubin was California Player of the Year. Hambly (or the Stanford brand name) continues to recruit the very best in the vb prep world.
Here is a video of Jordyn Harvey (#8) who I think might be a stronger hitter than Blyashov. She has an good wrist snap to go along with a big vertical jump.

The blocking will be substantially better in college, so she will have to adjust. It took Rubin a few months to do so.

So in 2024, we will have Rubin, Kurt, Harvey, and Blyashov as pin hitters. Playing time will be premium. It will be interesting to see who will be left out of the starting line up. Great problem to have.

I knew the rules back when beach volleyball first became an NCAA sport. Now I'm not so sure. Gubbins' first choice is beach vb. If she plays beach and indoor her first year, does the scholarship have to count against indoor? If she plays without an athletic scholarship can she play both sports her freshman year?
Prep Dig has Avery Jackson (OH indoors) rated #1 beach recruit in Texas. She is a 2024 Stanford beach recruit also.

If a scholarship SA plays both indoors and beach, her scholarship counts for indoor.
If she's not on scholarship, there is no problem playing both. (My guess is that's true of Line Andersson this year, for example.)
FWIW, Russell Corbelli, who was a volunteer assistant at Stanford for couple of years has been hired as an assistant at Vanderbilt.

Corbelli left Stanford to be an assistant at University of Missouri before now moving on to Vanderbilt. I only bring this up because I always thought the Missouri bio on him was a little over the top:

Corbelli spent the 2018-19 campaigns as a volunteer assistant coach at Stanford University. As the program's lead scout in opponent attacking, serving and passing; Corbelli played a pivotal role into the Cardinals' back to back NCAA National Championships.
In two years on the Stanford coaching staff, Corbelli oversaw 11 AVCA All-Americans, 11 AVCA Pacific North All-Region honorees and 12 All-Pac 12 recipients. The Cardinal also claimed consecutive Pac-12 Conference titles, including an unscathed 20-0 league record in 2018.
Corbelli is a nice guy. I don't have a problem with what's in his bio. Everyone wants to present themselves in the best possible light. Stanford is a stepping stone for many assistants to move higher up in the volleyball coaching world.
While I'm here a few random notes of interest to the hard-core college WVB fan:
Merritt Beason transfers from Florida to Nebraska. The coach at Nebraska is famous for saying he wants to develop players directly from prep level and not take transfers.
Whitney Lauenstein, starting OPP at Nebraska, retires from volleyball after passing of her father.
Carlie Cisneros, prepvolleyball's #1 2024 recruit committed some time ago to Arizona surprising the world of volleyball. This week, Dave Rubio, Arizona's head coach, announced his retirement.

Wait, Dave Rubio retired? I missed that. Wow. I think of him as the last of the Pac-10 old guys. 31 seasons.

Michigan's star MB Jess Robinson is still in the portal. Comment on another board said she is still not committed. Anyone heard anything?
Onye Ofoegbu, UC Irvine MB, is in the portal. One more year of eligibility. Touches 10'10". Reportedly still not committed. Her major is bioscience. I don't know if she plans to be a doctor. Comments on another board say she has the academics for Stanford.

I assume Shauna Smith who was hired a year ago as Director of Operations quit although she is still on the WVB website. My assessment of Hambly is a fantastic coach and a terrible hiring manager. His hires last two years max. I hope the two assistant coaches are still on board.
In other news highly rated Babi Gubbins, 6'3" OH (2024), will be playing beach only at Stanford. She is not playing indoor club this season to focus on beach.

Kevin kind of winced when I brought up the turnover at the barbecue in August.
I could imagine Mike Johnson might get another shot as a head coach in not too many years. Hope Alex Dunphy stays for longer.
Who is the new person (Director of Operations)? Not seeing them in the staff directory.
Also noticed Mary Hambly is no longer DO for beach volleyball. (She's now just a "casual" employee in GSB). No one listed with that title currently.
