Bob, what did you make of Tara's complaint that no one will play them? She already announced some of the non-conference schedule. Do you think she is having trouble filling it out?

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - BobK - 05-05-2021

We know we are playing Tennessee
, South Carolina and Texas. It’s the other 8-9. She had mentioned a tournament at the banquet but not tonight

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - jonnyss - 05-05-2021

well, maybe we use our connections to uc san diego (heidi), unlv (lindy), uc riverside (nicole), and usf (molly). that should fill a few games.

then i think we return 12 players. plus 4 recruits makes 16. anyone know if the pac-12 will be waiving the rule that no more than 15 can travel to conference away games?

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - BobK - 05-05-2021

15 is an ncaa rule. It’s waived for fall and winter sports. Spring sports using it now for the extra 5th year

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - mbdude - 05-05-2021

what do we do with 16 players?

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - PVTree - 05-05-2021

Have the starters be ranked in the top 5 and the bench in the top 25 of the AP poll?

Because of the NCAA giving everyone an extra year of eligibility, seniors who would've otherwise exhausted their eligibility will not count against the scholarship limit so Jerome and Wilson are not a part of the count to 15. We're good there. I'd imagine someone will redshirt though since there aren't enough minutes to go around.

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - BosCard - 05-05-2021

Great to hear that Wilson will be returning.

I suspect that we haven't seen her play to her full potential yet.  Over her time at Stanford she became a great defender.  Then last year she became a very good three-point shooter.  I hope next year we see more of her driving and finishing or stopping for the mid-range jumper.  She is athletic and strong so should be able to finish well through contact and her 3-point shooting was much improved last year so why not the mid-range this year.

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - TheFarm07 - 05-05-2021

That's brobdingnagian getting Anna back for another season.

Our 1 and 2 positions are our relative weakness (compared to our front court) going into next year, but having Wilson back will alleviate that somewhat and decrease the pressure on van Gytenbeek, Brown and Harriel to produce right away. Losing Kiana's production will be difficult to replace, but losing both her and Wilson would have left a lot of questions in our backcourt.

I would still have UConn and South Carolina ahead of us because of their insane amounts of talent at every position, but with Anna still in the lineup, we have a better chance of defending against Bueckers/Fudd/Westbrook/Williams or Henderson/Cooke/Johnson/Rivers (two top-5 guard recruits Staley is bringing in), though Cooke torched us in the national semis.

Great, Bob. Thanks.

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - CompSci87 - 05-05-2021

Thanks Bob. I forgot to put this on my calendar and was too busy with work to read my home email today, so I missed it. Great news that Anna and Alyssa are returning!

Can't wait!

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - martyup - 05-05-2021

Jones, Brink, Wilson, Hull(s), Jump, Belibi,  and Prechtel.  Add our experienced bench and the new stars coming in and T Dawg has one hell of a team to defend the crown.

RE: MBB and WBB the zoom - BACardinal - 05-06-2021

So with the extra year of eligibility for everyone that played last year does that mean scholarship limit doesn't count for the next four 4 years?

1)  The freshman that played on this years National Championship team are academically sophomores this upcoming year but will technically be considered freshman athletically and have four year of eligibility remaining?
2) Does the limit of 15 scholarships resume after the 2021 season?
3) How does this affect recruiting for the next four year? Very interesting

Someone please help clarify this for me. I thought I understood but the more I think about it the more confusing it becomes.

1. Correct, this past season's freshmen all still have 4 years of eligibility remaining.
2. The expectation right now is that after this upcoming season, the hard cap of 15 scholarships will go back into place so coaches will have to monitor that and be more selective in allowing seniors to come back for a 5th year. However, the NCAA has not made a ruling on this yet but that is the expectation.
3. It will definitely make recruiting more interesting, especially with the transfer portal becoming a much bigger thing now. Do you take a HS recruit or do you have one of your players come back for an extra year (assuming they want to)?

If there are players redshirted, and if players weren't told beforehand could make for some unhappy players. Still not enough minutes to go around

Will the Athletic Department fund an additional scholarship beyond the normal allotment?  Someone will have to pay it.

There was a zoom last night? They must've forgotten to invite me.
