Win, I look forward to your reports. If you have a chance to chat with an NCAA rep, can you please ask them why the men's NCAA golf championship has 30 teams while the women's field is only 24 teams.

A good start to the round, with our -7 keeping pace with top-seeded Wake Forest's -8. U$C the only other team under par at -2.

Midway through the first round, we are at -8, four strokes ahead of Wake.

Four bogies through 9 holes, for the entire team!

Stanford finishes the day at 12 under. We have an 11 stroke lead over second place (though Denver is still on the course). Only three teams ended the day below par. Obviously, it helps to be familiar with the course, and this is still the first day. But dang!

To give you an idea of how dominant the performance has been, Anne Krauter finished even, and her score won't count, but she is tied for 23rd in the field (out of 95). Our other players ran T1, T4, T4, T8 on the individual board.

We are 10 ahead of second-place Va Tech (-2); everyone else is +2 or worse (though two at +2 are still on the course). We still have 4 players in the top 10. Nice day's work!

Especially impressive when you consider that 4 of the 5 Stanford golfers have never played in an NCAA regional before (2 frosh, 2 sophs). Only Aline Krauter has prior post-season experience. It certainly helps to be playing on a familiar course with familiar greens and staying in familiar surroundings.
But the work is not done. Remember that goal #1 is to finish in the top 6 and qualify for nationals. Stanford would do well to stay separated from the inevitable scrum around positions 5, 6 and 7 where one bad hole on Wednesday can make the difference between going home and advancing to Scottsdale. The play was solid today. Don't let up.

I know that I should have found and posted this pre-tournament story before the tournament started. But it's still an enjoyable read about Angelina Ye, Aline Krauter, Rachel Heck and Ziyi Wang and what they did during the pandemic (mostly) away from Stanford.

They played awesome today! When the score you throw out is better than two-thirds of the field and you have 4 of the top 11 scores, you've outplayed the entire field. The greens were as fast as I've ever seen them - running at least 11 in the morning and higher in the afternoon as the sun came out and the heat came up. Tomorrow will be a couple degrees cooler but I expect them to be at least as fast tomorrow. Also some really challenging pin placements on the holes I saw.
But it's only day one. There is a large cluster of teams between +2 and +7, more than half of whom will not make the cut for the final round. Tomorrow is moving day will be interesting to see who moves and in which direction
Another highlight - from my other alma mater - Northwestern's Irene Kim got a hole-in-one on #3. She's tied for the lead with Sadie Englemann and Oklahoma St's Maja Stark.

Today's -12 round ties the team record, set at the 2017 Silverado Showdown.

I cannot imagine 11+ Stimp at Stanford. when I played, some putts -- from fron tof old 3 to back or similarly 12 or 17 -- were almost full shoulder turns. new interim GM is a keeper to get the course set up that way. :)

I didn't see the whole course yesterday but I will today. I can't imagine what 14, 16, and 17 will be like in particular.
Coach Ray is no longer the interim GM he was made full GM earlier this year. He's made some major improvements, especially the greens but also some other areas of course maintenance and appearance.

Has there ever been a better series of 27 holes played in an NCAA tournament? Stanford is 22 under, 1 bogie on 45 holes played this morning, and our worst player is -2 for the tournament. Our ladies are ranked 1st, 5th and 11th overall individually. A magic bunch of holes. I know its our home course, but this level of play is above and beyond.

Even more dominant now. Heck, Englemann and Seay part of a four way tie for first at -5. Ye tied for 5th at -6. Krauter tied for 10th at -2. Stanford at -23. Va Tech in second at -11.

Four way tie for first with all Stanford golfers at the moment!

So I’m looking at the team leaderboard right now and there’s a banner advertisement for VRBO running across the top of the screen that keeps repeating “ Find your happy place “ and “Do what you love.” It would appear the team has taken both of those sayings to heart... :-)

Your humble inside-the-ropes correspondent reporting...
There are many adjectives you could use to describe this team's performance after two rounds. I'm choosing dominating and statement-making. I think this team was really unhappy with its performance at Pac-12s just a couple weeks ago and was insulted by being seeded #5.
After two rounds Stanford holds an almost-insurmountable
***TWENTY-TWO SHOT LEAD***. It's current score of -25 is already lower than the record the team set just a month ago in Fresno at -24. And keep in mind they are doing this on a course where only 15 of 90+ players are under par. Even though it's their home course, this kind of performance is awe-inspiring.
Rachel Heck and teammate Angie Ye are tied for the lead at -7, with Brooke Seay (-6) and Sadie Eglemann (-5) close behind. Yes, that's two tied for 1st, one tied for 3rd, and one tied for 5th. Aline Krauter, who I think I will be walking with tomorrow, is at +2 which is still good enough for T29.
Meanwhile, the battles for the other five spots in the finals is going to likely come down to a stroke or two, especially the sixth and final spot. Wake Forest & Virginia Tech (-3), Oklahoma State (+1) and U$C (+3) are currently 2nd-5th and would likely have to falter significantly to not make the cut tomorrow. It's possible that will happen to at least one of them. Florida is in 6th at +9 with four teams with 5 shots of that final spot - Arizona, Pepperdine, Denver, and Northwestern.
Every team that is playing in this regional should be thankful it's not playing in the LSU Regional in Baton Rouge. The first two rounds have been rained out and even getting in 18 tomorrow is dicey right now. If tomorrow is washed out then the teams seeded 1-6 will advance without having played a single hole. That's just how it works in NCAA golf.
All for now. More updates tomorrow after the conclusion of play

Thanks, Win. I love that Stanford is showing strength from top to the bottom of the lineup. Why do you think the course played easier today? Average score was nearly a full shot less than yesterday.
RE: WGolf NCAA Regionals @ Stanford -
winflop - 05-11-2021
I'd say the likeliest reason is pin placements. Many were not particularly challenging today, although I did not see the whole course yesterday. The greens seemed to be rolling as fast as yesterday, and none of the players I walked with today made any comment about them being slower than yesterday. Also, warm temps and light winds were very similar to yesterday.
I expect to see tougher pin placements tomorrow for the final round, which will push scores back up to at least yesterday's average if not higher. The teams that succeed tomorrow will do two things particularly well - keep the ball in the fairway off the tee and keep the ball under the hole on the greens.
