MGolf NCAA Regionals - Spiny_Norman - 05-15-2021

Stanford has posted its lineup for the regional tournament in Albuquerque that begins on Monday - Michael Thorbjornsen, Ethan Ng, Karl Vilips, Nate Menon, David Snyder and substitute Daulet Tuleubayev. A notable name is missing - Barclay Brown. He has been Stanford's #1 player this season. Brown competed last weekend in the Walker Cup at Seminole GC in Florida, playing for the Great Britain and Ireland team. He played every day there. Something must have happened since then. Injury? Covid? Quarantine? Regardless, Stanford will be a lesser team without him.

EDIT - The pairings have been posted. Brown is playing #2 for Stanford with Menon not in the top 5. Something must have changed from the time Stanford published its pre-tournament PR on gostanford (which did not mention Brown) and now.

Stanford starts at 8 am Mountain time with Texas Tech and host New Mexico. Follow the action here - http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=22942

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - winflop - 05-15-2021

Great news on Brown playing. If Snyder is on the roster, it's as the alternate. The pairings show the usual lineup of Brown, Vilips, Thorbjornsen, Shimp, and Ng.

The Stanford PR release did not include Shimp or Brown. Maybe that was an error or maybe other circumstances were involved - https://admin.gostanford.com/gameday/men-s-golf-vs-ncaa-albuquerque-regional/mgolf/3846/

The pairings have changed. Brown and Shimp are out. Menon and Snyder are in.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - winflop - 05-17-2021

Yikes. Gotta believe there are injury/COVID/quarantine issues. Also means at least one of Brown/Shimp didn't make the trip because you're only allowed one alternate.

Hope the guys make the cut, going to harder now without Brown.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - BostonCard - 05-17-2021

Not exactly a blazing start; 3 bogies in the first 5 cumulative holes.

BC

No 5 bogies in a cumulative 9 holes.

BC

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - BostonCard - 05-17-2021

This is just brutal.  9 bogies and 6 pars in 15 cumulative holes.

No. now up to 7 bogies in 10 holes.  They are playing themselves into a very difficult position.  The only teams below us are the ones that have not yet teed off.  Not pretty.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - BostonCard - 05-17-2021

The team is starting to turn it around.  In the last three holes, it is six birdies and one bogie.

Yes indeed.  At one point today they were plus 6.  Now in second place at minus 4.

Geaux Cardinal!

As that famous American philosopher said, "It ain't over until its over"

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - BostonCard - 05-17-2021

That's crazy.  Every player birdied 1.

+9 through the first four holes (10 bogies, 1 birdie).  -11 (16 birdies, 5 bogies) since then.

Not crazy at all. After the rough start, the next 6 holes included 3 par 5s. Stanford ate those up. The team now closes with a tough stretch of holes from 5 to 9 which includes the 3 hardest holes on the golf course today (5, 6 and 8).

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - BostonCard - 05-17-2021

Yeah, +3 on 5 so far.

BC

Note, we are -8 on the par fives (T2), +3 on the par fours (but T2, everyone is struggling), and +5 on the par threes (T10)

Looks like middle of the road results for Day 1, if things hold.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - winflop - 05-17-2021

Reading between the lines here, Shimp & Brown tested positive for COVID. Tuleubayev is the alternate.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - Papa John - 05-17-2021

Hasn't one of the Covid vaccines been made available to all Stanford athletes by now?

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - BobK - 05-17-2021

I know a number of athletes at Stanford have had at least their first shot

That’s sad about the golfers

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - Papa John - 05-17-2021

Agreed, BobK, that is really a tough break for our two golfers and the rest of the team.

California declared all adults vaccine-eligible on April 15, but that doesn't mean it was available for everyone. Plus if you are an athlete, you have to plan for a day or two of side effects, which I'm sure can be difficult in season. And then the fact that the vaccines are not 100% effective.
