Tucker Fisk to play both ways -
cctop - 05-25-2021
In case you didn't get (or didn't read) the Inside the Cardinal email sent today, there's a short interview with Tucker Fisk who plans to play both TE and DL in the fall. Evidently he played the 2nd half of the Spring Game at DL.

I think this shows our lack of depth at DL.

For sure. While it may be that Fisk really does relish the idea of playing both ways, it is only possible if he can beat out his competition on the DL. Since it appears that was a pro-forma exercise, that competition must not have been very formidable.

Actually, Fisk played all three phases in the spring game...TE, d-line, and long snapper!
And Shaw mentioned Fisk playing both ways the week before the spring game, a soundbite we played & discussed on that week's TreeCast.

DWP and Tobin Phillips were being held out while Pakola is not on the team (for now). The "competition" is walk-ons.
Turns out signing three straight classes with 1 DL each is a bad idea. Who knew?

On back-to-back plays in the Spring Game the offense ran the ball with Fisk on the D-Line. On the first they ran right at him, he was double-teamed by the O-Line and was pancaked. On the second play they ran away from him and he chased the runner down in the backfield and tackled him for a loss. Mixed bag, but Fisk showed some potential on defense.

I didn't see enough to form an opinion about how he can help the defense, but in the limited clips I saw of the proceedings, Zephron Lester looked the part of a DT. He seems to have grown a bit since high school. Could he offer more as a player than his 2 star recruit ranking might have suggested?

I doubt it.
Bo Peek looked quite good in his only spring game, FWIW.

Is this based on watching him play, or skepticism based on not seeing him play, but being aware of his recruiting profile?

That is the "So you want to play defense now? We aren't good enough for you anymore". play. I am sure he expected it.

That's based on Sam having forgotten more about Stanford football than you will know. I would take what he says seriously.

DL is hard enough to play as a RS Frosh as it is. Combine that with being undersized (6'1" 300ish Drake Nugent looked
significantly bigger than him) and it's tough to see him doing much. We have 2 DTs ahead of him on the depth chart anyways (possibly 3 pending Pakola's return), and only play 2 DL a majority of the time so "DT" doesn't even mean a ton as a designation.
FWIW, right now I'm more concerned with Nugent. Our presumed starting C did not impress me. (And he handled Lester on all but 1 play, and pancaked him a couple times.)

Quite a bitchy response. Sam was perfectly capable of answering my perfectly legitimate question (as he did).

Now to be clear, the lights can come on at any time and maybe he'll become the next David Parry. He did have a couple G5 offers, and DL is a position where old man strength really does help. I just doubt we'll see anything from him in the near term.
