When a coach of this caliber comes on board, you know that he probably contacted Stanford, not the other way around, especially not in such a short time frame. Muir and the Stanford administration completely lucked out this time.

Wrestling boosters may have started contacting prospective new coaches as soon as the previous coach announced his departure in the hopes of making a quick transition while also banking on eventual reinstatement.
Whatever the sequence of events, I agree, Muir lucked out here. I hope the wrestling team regroups well under Koll.

However, the "Varsity Blues" profile Muir seems to have generated isn't very complimentary to him or to Stanford. Naturally, I have no way of knowing if the portrait painted by John Vandemoer is accurate. I suspect most of us do not. If it is anywhere close to accurate Muir wasn't meeting even minimum standards of program oversight. It seems to me this is an area the BOT should have examined.

Right, the big indictment of Muir is that he allowed the Varsity Blues scandal to happen on his watch. Stanford’s first major NCAA violations also happened during his term. To me, that is reason enough to look elsewhere for a new AD. Assumptions about his work ethic versus his luck, on the other hand, strike me as assertions without evidence, and in any case strike me as somewhat inappropriate.

Actually Stanford had a major violation In 1941.
Why did the rowing coach suddenly leave ? Why didn’t that have to with Muir being on top of things

to recap, our AD has overseen our first recruiting blight/scandal, he consistently runs an overall program that operates in the red requiring endowment spend down and University subsidies, and his programs no longer win at sufficiently high levels to retain the Director's Cup. and the upside of Bernie is his getting lucky to hire a good head coach for a program he recommended be discontinued?

I have to think, in the context of Stanford HR protocol, that Muir is at this moment "on a path" to a graceful and dignified exit. A $ayonara, as it were. Then, again, this situation could be stickier and more problematic.
