Track and field western regionals - akiddoc - 05-30-2021

Heymach continues to impress. First place in the 1500. 1st in the 5000. Impressive double.

Donaghu wins heat number 2 of the 5000.

In the 400, Athing Mu of T A&M sets the collegiate record. She's 18 years old. She set the NCAA record in the 800 about 6 weeks ago. Skipping it at NCAA's. Heat 2:

Yes, thanks so much for posting them.  Heymach is very impressive, I hope she doesn't have to run the 1500 and 5000 on the same day in Eugene.  She struck me as still having some kick left in both races.  Hopefully, Eugene will see her set to more personal bests.  I thought at times she let herself get boxed in, but there was always enough race left for her to work her way out.  She was so close to a Stanford all time best in the 1500.  She could well own that record before done in Eugene.  Based on these two races, the 1500 might be her best distance.

Both 1500 races happen before the 5000. I don’t think Donaghu has enough speed to place in the 1500. If I was the coach I would have her do the 5000 only. I think we’ll see Heymach do the double.

I see it similarly. I think both Heymach and Donaghu have a chance to win the 5000 and both might score in the top 3. In the 1500, Heymach has more of an outside shot, but it is going to be extremely difficult to take down Hurta from Colorado for the top slot. I'm thinking both have better shots at the 5000. Heymach has more speed and nobody seems to know what she is capable of in her current state of peaking, so I'm thinking the 1500 is a wild card, depending on pace and tactics. Doubling may be a good idea for her, but I'm not sure, though watching her in that crazy 800/5000 double in 70 minutes, I'm tempted to give her the benefit of the doubt.

By the way, Kessler not only smashed Webb’s record by 4 seconds, he beat the NCAA record and the U20 record set by Jim Ryun. He also ran the Olympic qualifying standard. Will be at NAU next year as a freshman.
