Robin Lopez on Social Media - FarmBoy - 06-01-2021
I noticed a couple of times in the past week, during Washington playoff games, that Robin Lopez was trending on twitter. It seems Sports Twitter was fascinated/offended/surprised by his use of the hook shot. It seemed random the first time I saw him trend but the fact he trended again made me wonder if there's somethin I'm missing. Is he a popular character to love to hate? I'd never seen it before.

It reminded me that a few years ago I was pleasantly surprised he was able to stick in the NBA. When the Lopi came out, I knew Brook was going to have a decent, if not star level, career. But was skeptical that Robin would develop enough of an offensive capability to stick. I'm sure it took a lot of hard work on his end to develop into the solid player he became.

Robin (first name usage) also had this ongoing thing of playfully roughhousing with the opponent mascots.
It entertains and makes him a WWE-type villain to fans.

I was also wondering if his willingness to play the heel/villain makes it more likely for him to trend negatively, even if the gag with the mascots is clearly in jest.

I definitely remember Kareem's famous "sky hook." Local Warriors fans may recall that Manute Bol had the "space hook."

I recall commentary 10 to 20 years ago regarding the lack of use of the hook shot in the NBA resulting from a perception among players that it wasn't, for lack of a better word, "manly". The theory was that tall players could be much more dominant than they are but are afraid of being ridiculed by the rest of basketball culture for employing a "weak" offensive move, so they don't develop the skill set that would ultimately make them a brobdingnagian asset in the NBA. It's hard to believe being bullied is enough to make a player not willing to try to develop a shot that could really extend their careers. I wonder how much truth there is to this theory.

Probably the same reason no one throws free throws granny style. I think statistically, they are more likely to go in, but no one would be able to endure the trash talk.

I'm disappointed that we don't see more of our post players use jump hooks in close. Keefe and Kisunas should perfect this shot over the summer, rather than get all panicky when they get an OR and go up timidly, hoping their putbacks won't bet blocked. In addition to being able to put back ORs, they should at least have 1-2 reliable offensive moves in their arsenal for next season...and if they somehow fail to develop a 10 ft jump shout, it had better be in spite of taking 500 a day, every day.
On a related note, I wonder when Maxime Raynaud shows up on campus and what sort of inside game he brings with him.

I recall Brooke Smith utilizing the Brooke Hook often.
